99 4Runner-Most desirable, why???

I am looking at a 99 4runner Limited 4x4 with TRD Supercharger & exhaust.
I noticed that some people are calling the 99 the most desirable of the 3rd gen's.
Why is that?

Is the 99 with 141,000 miles, in good shape, in Florida a good buy for $7,500 ??
Why?

I have a 97 4runner SR5 4X4. What is different between the 2 years?

The '99s sat the highest out of all the 3rd Gens. I'd say 1" max over your '97.

The controls are more current in the '99. The '99 has a different front bumper.

Does the '99 have the rear locker?

Oh, it also has BFG Mud Terrains, and the 3rd row seating.

No problem, I put you in the correct section. I will let members chime in. I like becasue of the up-grades, especially the safety items and the cup holders. Also, you can get a rear locker and a stick shift in these models, if you look hard enough.
 
Here's a sticky I made to detail the mid gen upgrades in '99 and while all those made the 4Runner easier to live with and ergonomically better it was the combination of the upgrades PLUS '99s had the taller coils (not all had 'em but all Highlander/Sport models had 'em) plus you could still get the 5 speed and rear locker and still could get the skinny plastic black flares on the SR5s (optional with a package or you just had the chrome strip or nothing) which I personally prefer when off roading than the painted widebody version.
2000s still have the same options but the Sport models had the wider flares and taller coils went away mid production but still retained a manual and locker and still are coveted too.
'99 highlander/sport models still retain a distinction of being mildy rarer than other years due to it being the only model sans the wider flares and were only available in black or jade and weren't mass marketed like the 4th gen Sports.

I sold my '97 after only a year since I came across my ideal 4Runner with a good price and couldn't pass it up. The only thing I would want is the 5 speed but no biggie,the rear diff lock was what I wanted and when I first saw them in '99 the Highlander model was the one I wanted.

People love or hate the fatlip bumper but I like it and makes the front look a little more agressive IMO and molded foglight ports were a huge plus.

I LOVE your green 4Runner!

Looks a lot like the 99 LTD I am looking at.

Is the one I am asking about worth the $7,500 price?

Any maintenance records? Good pic of the undercarriage? give it a good inspection?

$7500 is good if everyhting seems to be order. I have 154k on mine and the only thing that doesn't work is the power antenna and I have zero leaks and runs very well.
 
I like the 99 cause of the upgrades such as the better cup holders, rear locker, and the fact that there is a place for the rear headrests to go when you fold the back seat. However, at this point in time, if I can get anything from 96-00 with a manual tranny, I'd take it. I just really want a manual 4WD 3rd gen.
 
Just compare it to 96-98 and you will be sold, the creature features that you get are very nice, has a much better air intake, and pretty much the best looking/functioning generation of 4r IMO!!

how about you buy the 99 and I will trade you straight across for my '97, I only have 235k miles so you'd totally make out on the deal since mine is already broke in, LOL!

Not every '99 had them;my mom's '99 Limited has regular Runner coils but all Highlander models had them but I'm not sure how Toyota decided which got 'em and which didn't since it wasn't an option.
 
Other years had rear lockers too. Not all '99s had the taller coils and even then they don't sit an inch taller than every other year. I would bet that they are only .25" taller than a '98.

Yeah, I was messin around with ya, my 97 sits at the same height as a 98, and i saw the coils between the years and 98 vs. 99 is far off.
 
99+'s Have better cupholders
Updated front bumper, headlights, grille and updated rear badging on the rear tailgate.
99-2000 Limiteds are Standard with rear locker.
99-2000 SR5- are optional if I am not mistaken very rare.
