99' 4runner wont start.

I came to start my 4runner today, and it wont start, iv never had this problem before, its not the batterie because i still have power everywhere. All it does when i turn the key is "click, click" is it the starter or would it be the alternator? or am i way off? any advice will help. thanks in advace.

You may still have power at your door locks, headlights, etc but there may not be enough to start the car. The battery is 12 Volts and I think at 10.5 or 11 its considered not enought to start the car. See if you can get a jump start and check the life of your battery at the auto parts store if you can take the battery in or get it started.
 
How many clicks are you hearing? If it's just 1 click then it's most likely your starter contacts are worn
(try tapping on the starter) and try to start it again.
If that fails, Pull your starter out and replace the contact and plunger.

If it keeps clicking, then probably not enough juice in the battery to crank the engine over (try jumping it) I know you said you still have power everywhere, But if your battery is low it won't have enough power to crank over the engine.

Edit. Also check and make sure your connections are good.
 
there is only 1 click, i am going to get a boost to see if thats the problem, i will let you know. thanks
 
Sounds like the starter. Mine was doing that but then if I cranked it a couple of more times it would start but it was getting worse before I replaced my starter. I got almost 160k miles from my original one.
 
ok so i charged the batterie, got a boost, brought it in and got it charged, they said the batterie is great. think it can be the starter? if it is the starter, how hard is it to change? (im a millwright not a car mechanic) and where is it located exacly?

Do a search on 'starter contacts' in the 3G forum and you will have all the info you need. Don't buy a new starter, and especially not a crap reman and give up your beautiful OE Denso starter that is good for longer than the rest of the truck. You just need $20 worth of copper contacts replaced and you are back in business for another ten years.
 
I had the same prob with mine- turned out it was the sylinoid (sp?) contacts in the starter- I was able to change it from the passenger side wheel well if I remember correctly and it was only a few bucks for the contacts..hope that helps :/

i know exactly whats wrong bud, your starter contact is wearing out, take the starter off go to dealer and get the contact for about 20bucks or 15 at autozone
 
+1 on starter contact. That was the first time I really got my hands dirty doing work on the runner. Research brought me here and now I want to spend too much money... :surfer:
 
ok for all those who want to know what the problem was. The starter was completly broken, i took it off and it sounded like a rattle toy inside, opened it, and well you guessed it, the starter was in 100 pieces, replaced it and now the 4runner is running smooth again. Thanks to all those who helped me. T4R.org for life!
