I have a 99 4WD Automatic 6Cyl (220,000 miles), and have an issue with what I think is the transmission. I first noticed it while towing a trailer, but found it does it without the trailer also.
While driving on the interstate at 65-70mpg and starting to go up a hill, the transmission downshifts to a lower gear and starts slipping/stuttering. It is pretty noticeable with the trailer, and not as noticeable without, but is still there. The check engine light is not coming on, no codes. Fluid is fine, checked while hot. When checked cold, it is above the hot line, not sure why?
It seems to downshift twice on big hills, the first downshift the RPMs go to 2500 or so, then the 2nd downshift, the RPM's go to 3500. The slipping/stuttering is only on the 2nd downshift. I can put the transmission down in 2nd gear (4500 RPMS or so) and notice no slipping/stuttering. The engine runs perfect as always, so I am leaning towards it being the transmission. Any suggestions on what it could be (one of the solenoids?), or am I looking at a new transmission?
