99 Auto Headlights Battery Drain

Hey. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. When the door opens, the headlights go out on the auto setting. The problem is, if it's left in the auto setting, even though lights are out, the battery drains and needs jumped within a few hours. I have to manually turn them to the off position to preserve the battery. It's an extremely hard habit to break after 15 years. Any advice? There is nothing new plugged in, no other source of power that could be draining it.

I may buy a new battery just to see if that resolves the issue.

Apples to oranges but I had this happen on a roommates Kia.

Turned out to be the module that controls the headlights. Dealer swapped it once, when the second one started acting up she just got in the habit of turning them on and off manually.

May not be the same on the 4runner .... I wouldn't suspect the battery if it works OK otherwise and does not die with the lights manually off.
