99' Check Engine light ON

prob an O2 sensor. just get used to that little check engine light being on....it seems to be a common trait for most of my friends toyotas (the trucks at least).
worth looking in to though. advance or autozone should be able to check it....they wont clear your codes anymore cause some idiot tried to sue.

Hello Guys,
The Runner have now the Check Engine light on now, any ideas?
This car can be scanned, obdII? vagcom?

Yup it can be scanned. Any parts store (Autozone) and usually scan for free.
In 1996 the OBD-II specification was made mandatory for all cars sold in the United States.
Vagcom sounds like your coming from VW??

Yes in deed, my daily car is a vw, i want to fix this light because i want to sell my Runner to upgrade to a hilux, but if i show the car with check engine light its bad news...
So if anybody can tell me which program should i use to scan my car will be appreciated.
Im not at the US, so i dont have Autozone near by jeje

Any generic OBD2 code reader will do. Find someone or a business to scan it and let you know what the code is and then they can clear it for you.
Vagcom is VW specific, so you need a generic scanner.
Ok will look for some OBD2 scanner near by. tks man!

BTW, Autozone doesn't do it anymore, as of like a year ago.

Didn't know that. I think the last time I was there having them scan it for me, I got fed up with the S**t and just went out and bought my own scanner. Been scanning mine and many others for a while now. One of the best tools I ever bought

I went to an Autozone in Columbia, Md. when I was visiting my son two months ago. (At home, I have a BR-3 and a laptop.) They won't DO it, but they were perfectly happy to loan me a decent handheld against my driver's license so that I could do it myself. No charge, no hassle. Kalifornia may be different, as I think there was some state regulation on the matter.
To the OP, a non-US model 3rd gen might NOT be OBDII. My '97 Brazilian HiLux SW4 does NOT have OBDII. Take a look below the dash, right in front of where the driver's right knee would be, and see if there is a rectangular plug there. It points down toward the floor. If not, there is a British HiLux board that could be better able to help you. Sorry, I don't have a link.

mastertech is the factory scan tool until 2007. Used to be vetronix now i think theyre owned by bosch but could be wrong. kind of old technology. now its pc based. its a good scanner, gm used it too until the tech2 came out. but any scanner will work to a certain degree. I use a snap on modis and can do quite a bit with it. otc makes a decent scanner too along with many others. Unless your reprogramming computers you dont need anything fancy. technology is cheap.
Must be a location thing, after washing the engine bay today (got this thing last saturday) the light came on, drove straight to Autozone and had them scan it...turns out I MADE it have a misfire. :shakinghead: New plugs and wires this weekend.
My truck seemed perfect last week, then flew to Vegas for a long weekend. Just drove to Taco Bell and back on Tuesday and felt slight hesitation/jerky acceleration. Thought, hmm hope that's not my tranny. Started it up this morning, it still idles fine and smooth. Put it in Drive and I felt some slight difference, like more rough. Put it in park, smooth again. Went on freeway and engine light went on real quick! Got off freeway right away, went to gas station. Still running fine at idle and slightly jerky on acceleration. Oil was change 1K ago and still looks good now... Hmmmm
Could I have a misfire and still idle smoothly?! It's probably about time for plugs and wires for me anyway...

Got my first Check engine light on today ... gas cap may have been loose...lol I just tightened it and it went away..
I wish Toyota had vag com...

My Dad has an old school OBD sensor. It said misfire on #3 cyl.
Replaced all the plugs tonight and seems to run good. Going to do the wires also, they are original. OOPS!
FYI - I just saw an AAMCO commercial on TV just now in California and it said they would check your 'check engine' light for FREE!
