99 - Checking CEL Codes - Low RPM Rough Running

Is there a way to check the CEL codes for a 99? Do I have to get a scan tool to do it?

My 99 V6 auto is running rough under load at low rpm. Just started doing it. The CEL flashhed a couple of times in succession but did not stay on.

Any ideas where to look? It would be nice to just use a jumper and read them...

Plugs?
Wires?

Where to start...

Thanks for your help~!

Well if your check engine light was flashing then u have a misfire. Check your plugs, plug wires and MAF sensor. Try getting your hands on a scan tool and see what the code is. I hope some of this helps.

On a 99 the only way to read the CEL is with a scan tool. Autozone has scan tools that they will hook up and read the codes for you at no charge. Try calling one and see what they say. If it is a mis-fire and if it set a code and it is stored then it will tell you what cylinder is doing the mis-fire.

No, the lights not blinking anymore.

I'm in Ontario. I figured that Canadian Tire would do the same as far as checking codes. The guy laughed and said "No way! We chareg an hours labour. It's $82 plus tax (at 13%)." Hmmm... could almost buy a scanner for that! I don't think i'll find anywhere.

Ideas? Still running like crap. No light, but its still missing.

What have you checked so far?

Pull the plugs and inspect them. If one cylinder is misfiring, the plug might look different from the others. Although a misfire should throw a code and your CEL should stay on.

Easy enough to swap plugs and wires...to rule that out.

Have you pulled your MAF sensor and cleaned it? That's free and easy to do.

Without a code, it's difficult to diagnose. Can you take a video of what's happening?

Finally got a code reader.

It has a P0303 code. Cylinder 3 misfire.

So, any ideas?

Plug wires?

Plug looks good - same as the rest.

Also, how often should the fuel filter be changed?
