99 coils added 2 inches up front??

Ok so I put new Toyota brand coils and bilsteins up front in my 99 limited. Now after it has two inches up front I did not have before, is this to be expected? 38 1/4 up front floor to center bottom wheel well. 36 in rear. I need 2.5 inch coils now for rear. Rides ok except the squat but you can tell it's mucho stiffer.

I guess I did not know the new coils would do this? Being I have a 99 and bought same 99 coils.

Any ideas?

Someone else would probably have better info, but I'm pretty sure Toyota first made the '99 4Runners with "tall" coils and after some sort of fatal event dealing with a SUV or truck Toyota decided to go with a shorter coil on future 4Runners. If you got replacement coils, you might have just replaced the short coils with the tall coils

if you got the tall coils that lift 1" and you were sagging 1" that makes sense...

I ordered the Tall coils (w/ the Bilstein shocks) and had 36" in the front and 36.5" in the rear.

I would check the coils and make sure they are seated properly on the perch, and check the perch and make sure you have it the right direction on the shock.

What size tires are you running? 38" is a bit tall for simply Bils and '99 coils.

Stock size tires, BF T/A's. it will look decent when I get some new back coils, anyone have some 2.5 inch OME's or something laying around These are just the yellow bodied HD Bilsteins purchased from Autozone. Toyota dealer put the struts together for me and they look sano, truck sits even, all be it high, paint codes forward on spring, strut bottom to the outboard side.

I guess I was just really suprised more than anything. the old coils I compressed and took off old struts by simply using spring compressor and half inch ratchet. it was rather easy. new struts I could not compress with my cheepo compressor and snap on 1/2 inch impact running at 120psi. so I took them to local toyota dealer and they did it no problem, for free mind you. I guess I will buy 2.5 springs for rear and then get a brushguard for the front as I dont think I have to worry so much about sag anymore. Thinking some wheel spacers too.

I seen one other guy in the springs sticky thread that said he had the same thing happen, but thats all I found from searching here. Thanks for all the help guys, appreciate it.

make sure the spring seat looks like this on the shock and not the other way around

Can you post a pic or two? 38" is really high for stock coils.

On my Wife's '97, in the front, went from about 34.5 to about 35.5 after the '99 coils and Tokico Trekmasters.

steeze, holy crap, I think you nailed it. my Bilsteins have black bottom spring holders. not the aluminum ones like you ahve, and I have them flipped over so the funnel goes up towards the top of the strut, not coned down like you show. shoooooooot. well this may solve my issue, now it just means iH ahve flip them. oh what fun.

yeah thats it, thats the fix. called Bilstein and talked to them, the spring cup needs to be flipped.

WOW, so wait, the Toyota dealership put the spring cups on backwards when they put together your struts??? is that what we have decided??

me and they are back off and at dealer for the flip tomorrow. Thanks you guys.
