99 Highlander Coils - Worth it?

Are you buying new or used? Depending on how many miles are on them, you may hardly notice any lift at all. I say go for it if you can get them for a good price, otherwise I'd pass. The only reason I bought mine is because they were $60 on craigslist.

Haven't decided yet on new or used, but have been seeing some used coils on the for sale section. They aren't that difficult to install anyway so maybe I should just do it. Did you notice a difference that was worth it on yours?

if you are gonna buy them new i would not do it, just cause new 99 tall coils and struts/shocks will cost almost as much as OME coils and struts/shocks... when i did mine they brought be back to stock height, but that was after i put on all my armor, sliders, full budbuilts skids and little skip tank skid and the extra weight i carry around daily -roof rack, tools, spare tire, search and rescue gear, dog ect... i now sit like all other 97/98s with no load. and i have air bags to help with the sag when i tow a trailer.

All depends. I have used '99 coils in my '97 Limited. I gained almost 2" because my stock, 190K suspension was shot to sh*t. I don't off road, it's my DD, needs to get me around and still fit into Philly parking garages.
If you want a trail rig and off road a lot, they're probably not worth it. If you want to breathe new life into your old rig, they're great.
Won't gain me a lot of popularity points on here but there are a lot of drawbacks to having a lifted rig. Unless you use it regularly as a lifted rig, it's kind of a waste IMO.

yes, but if you are going for a "first mod", or early mod and want a little bit more aggressive look, the 99 talls will work. true "lifted" rigs (2-3.5") can keep you from getting into the parking garage at the mall, or your own home garage sometimes, but are much more of an advantage off road. however, i wheel my runner quite a bit and have taken it some places that guys with jeeps and blazer and broncos ect on 35+ tires with full lockers give me looks like im insane and crazy, and i still drive it home, so you dont have to have a big lift to wheel it. and if your just looking to make your runner look a little "bigger" or "meaner" and $$$ is tight, then buy em.
i plan on running mine for another 6 or some months while i save up for toytec front coil overs and light racing UCA, then i will offload my 99talls at that point.

It was worth it on mine because I was replacing the shocks anyway and I was able to get my 99 talls for $60. It's just like the kid said, it's not worth it to buy them brand new because for the same price you can get some OME's that will give you even more lift. I say go for it, but only if you can get a used set for a good price.

I can measure. I have the tall coils on my 99 (not just highlanders). Ill measure hub center to fender though too, since ground to fender/bumper doesnt account for different tires.
It does sit noticeably higher than other stock runners I part next too. My coils will also be up for sale soon too. They are old so I wont ask much for them in cash or trade.

i think with my 99 coils i was about 21" hub to fender all around.

I gained about 1/2" all around going from '96 Hilux Surf coils to '99 tall's, but the rear sagged. A 10mm spacer on the back made it level again, but anytime it was loaded the rear sagged again. I swapped the rears out for some OME 906's and it's perfect, slight positive rake, and carries a load with no sagging, less bodyroll, still rides really nicely.
I needed that extra 1/2" in the front to keep my 265/75/16's from rubbing (very slight, maybe once a day it would happen, but very annoying). Fixed my problem!

Personally, NO!
Go for some Old Man Emu coils and get 3". I started at ~2"/3"(TRD,890). Great ride and nice height. This is a good area to be. CV angles will still be good (use a diff drop) and will set you apart from other stock rigs.
True story. I wheeled with a FJ Cruiser w/3" lift, me with my TRD/890 lift and I cleared obstacles that he was stuck on.
I went higher because I rock crawl and keep doing bigger obstacles.
There is a shot of my rig on NEW coils/before settling on stock size tires.

"Worth it" is relative to what you want them for and how much you spent once installed.

Hard to beat that price. You are also sitting higher due to your body lift. I'm thinking that 99 coils on a 97 won't be too much lift.

I got almost 2" on my '97 going to '99Tall coils but my stock '97 suspension was beat to hell too. The gain will be different for all, it's relative to how bad the stuff you're replacing is.

Yes indeed! It wasn't much lift but springs, BL, tires was enough to get us by for the past season. Now that the wife is used to it, I'll be browsing for tundra coils after the new year. LC8's already procured...
