99 limited w/ auto climate control again

Bought a 99 limited few weeks back and the auto climate control hardly works. Called all my local dealers and a new unit is $975-$1125. Has anyone been able to ever locate a used one? The parts guys swear that it can not be taken apart and fixed so I guess I am screwed if I can't find one.

Thanks.

Well, it can be taken apart, but unless you know your way around a PCB with a bunch of components on it, you'll be lost.

What's wrong with it? Does the automatic feature just go berserk? I usually don't use the auto feature, so I don't even know if mine works. But, everything else seems to work.

Check www.car-part.com.

Choose 1999, then choose Toyota 4Runner, then choose Heater/AC Control...and hit search. There are several used units out there. Go nuts!

My a/c button, auto button hardly ever respond. The fresh air button will work with force. I am realy hating the fact that I bought a 4runner with this feature. Paying a $1k for a part to fix it is just got me sour right now. If it can come apart I might try and find someone with some electrical back ground to fix it.

Thanks.

Thanks guys. Just bought one off ebay. Keeping my fingers crossed that it works!!

The dealers claim these are not a common problem, but the salvage dealers claim they sell as fast as they get them?

Have searched on here and not much info coming up for me, only a few threads that actualy discuss problems with the digital units.

Is this thing hard to replace? Guess I will find out the hard way!

Not hard to replace.

1. Remove center console trim
2. Remove HVAC control faceplate (pull)
3. Remove HVAC control screws (2)
4. Pull unit out, remove harnesses from back
5. Install new unit.

I read a post a while ago, the problem with these units is the buttons.

There is a film that makes contact behind the button and it can wear and stick.

On my truck when the buttons stick, it will work when the temps go opposite of the existing. If hot, will work when cool and vice versa.

Having the same problem. I took mine apart a while back and it worked for a while. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt. I leave it on auto, when I can get the auto to light up. If the new unit fixes it let us know.

Will post a report. Should be here tomorrow. Since I am going to replace the CD player I am going to wait a week or so and do it all at the same time while I a got the dash apart.

That is the best place to check for sure....or the Toyota Salvage in Pheonix if anyone is looking for used parts.

Yeah this is a hassle with my truck, I have a 2000 Limited.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we just don't know how to use it...

I remember having to put up with the a/c being on all winter, then I read the book, and turned it off. Now of course it is warming up soon, and I guess I will have to try to figure it all out again....

You never really know if the buttons work, because you don't know what buttons to press... it's a little frustrating

The way I tolerate the controls is simple.

Leave it on Auto. Use the temperature knob ONLY.

If too warm, push the a/c. When too cool, turn a/c off and it will go back to auto.

Then again, not sure which buttons on your unit are problematic. :bonk:

New to the forum.... looks like a lot of good info and members.... I live in Southern Colorado and have a 2001 T4R Limited..

Any one have an update on how to maybe fix this issue? I am having issues like this. I have not had any luck sourcing a used unit.. I have taken it apart and cleaned everything with electrical cleaner and it works for a few hours and then you have to press really hard to get AUTO, A/C, FRONT, or OUTSIDE TEMP to work....

Same prob...

I am having the same problem with my 1999 4Runner Limited.

I have checked ebay and found a place that will repair my unit for $149 but wondering what I do while I don't have it.

I have not had any luck with finding it on the salvage yard websites.

Anyone have any luck with getting them repaired?

Thanks,
andy

Didn't get it repaired, not sure how reliable that route is. Was able toget a new one for about $500 installed. Not cheap but what else could I do. Had no idea about salvage yards at the time

Just an FYI: I used ATE:High Quality Rebuilds at Exceptional Pricing (found on eBay) to rebuild my wife's climate control. It was $150 + $16 s/h, plus $30 to 2-day it to them.

They turned it around in a day and shipped it back, and with the instructions I found on this forum I made the swap in no time. Everything works perfectly, they warentee it for life, and we are waaaaay cheaper than new, and we got it working in our timeframe, because I couldn't even find a used one...

I just bought a 99 4runner with a non functioning electronic ac/heater control too, the worst part of it is that I can't get it on defrost so I can't see out my winshield for the first 15 minutes of my drive every day. Plus the a/c never turns off.

Can this be replaced by a non electronic heater control?

Just sent mine in today

I'm not sure about replacing it with a non electonic heater. But I just sent mine in today to ASI to get fix. I bought the repair on ebay for $98 which included shipping both ways. I'll let you know if it works when it comes back and how long it took. I tried to find local parts but they were all broke as well. Good luck. BTW my buttons also didn't work so I took the unit completely apart and just put it back together and they seemed to work.
