I read in someone's post that they swapped a '99 MAF into a '97, is this an option? I understood you would have to change the ecu??

I recently did this and got a noticeable amount of power gain. It has been less than a week so I don't have any mileage numbers. Anyhow, I got the idea from some Landcruiser threads on IH8Mud. A fellow named Landtank was making new housings to fit the newer style maf. All you had to do was change the wires in the plug so they would work properly. So, I took the maf and air box housing from the 99, placed it in my 97 and switched the wires to be the same as the 99. Works like a champ!! I first plugged it in without changing the wiring and the CEL came on and it would die. But once the wires were set in place I had no problems. Let me know if you have more questions.

I have a K&N cold air intake, am I going to need to change modify it? Is there a wiring diagram that you used? Can u take a pic so I can see what it looks like? Just looking at the MAF in my '97 I know it is restricting airflow, I am just not sure if I am going to have to modify my intake. Since this is my daily driver I need to get my ducks in a row before I start so I can be sure to be driving to work the next day. Thanks for the info and any additional help.

Same story here. I have a K&N intake, and after seeing pictures of the newer style MAF, it's obvious its much less restrictive. I'd love to do this too, but like drinknmolson, I want all my ducks in a row first.
Where do you get a new style MAF besides the junkyard?

Sorry it took me so long, but I got the pics!! If you notice in the pic, the only wire that stayed put is the white with the blue stripe. Then the others followed in order. Real easy to remove the wires, just get a small screwdriver and pry out the white lock bar, then underneath the shiny metal clips inside, there is a small black tab toward the bottom with the shiny metal on it, its hard to see, just put an even smaller screwdriver in there and sort of press it down. This releases the wire and you can gently pull it out. Install is just find the appropriate spot and gently push the wire back in. If you get resistance you may need to push that little black clip up a bit. Hope this helps.
