99 Runner 240k Newbie...need advice

I am a newbie but I came across the site a few weeks ago and think it is fantastic. Here is my intro, I have a 99 4Runner w/ 4wd and the 2.7 liter 4-cylinder engine with the Automatic Trans. I've had it since new and it has been living up to being the legend that they are known for - I have 240,000 miles on it and have only had Oil, Brakes, and Tires done on it. It has hauled tons of stuff cross country and it doesn't show for the miles at all. I will get pics up sometime later but you all have probably seen tons of these out there - its Desert Dune with the Steel Wheels.

Anyways, sorry to have bored most of you....I have a question though, I have the original radio in it has stopped working, I'm thinking of putting a new one in myself - I know its been talked about a lot on here but I was wondering what types of decks do people reccomend (leaning toward an entry or mid-range Alpine) and I have two Alpine Type-S Speakers...how hard is it to get the door panels off the front?

The truck is basic, even to the extent the windows are roll-down, it has the flexible permenent antenna, and doesn't even have the factory clock in it. (except for the tailgate glass which has the power switch). I love the 4Runner though, it isn't worth much but its better than half the crap being made today and one reason I am thinking of doing the work myself is that I want to learn how to do it out of my own interest, I know if I paid an extra few bucks I could just have it done but where is the fun in that.

Sorry if this has been talked about before, but if anyones got any ideas - send them this way.

btw, just my opinion but Toyota should have offerred the 2010 4Runners with a Turbo Diesel since they dropped the V8s.....a Diesel Runner seems like it would be an ideal setup.

Welcome! Sounds like a nice Runner. Post up some pics.

How much are you looking to spend? Lots of choices out there.

you should replace that timing belt, man ;-)

i like the double din units some of the guys have on here, i think it's the 4000hu or something like that it was talked about in the last week or so on here, got that guy rolling around in the back of my mind right now lol.

Ditto on the timing belt and might as well do the water pump, thermostat and all your belts and hoses!

I've always had good luck with Crutchfield for car stereos. You get all the adapters and instructions specific for your vehicle which helps quite a bit. They have good tech guys too if you can describe what you're looking for they'll point you to a good selection to choose from...

I second the Crutchfield suggestion. I got a replacement radio/CD player with iPod connector for the '96 that I drove for 100K (that my brother drives now).

It has 250K now. But we've done a lot more than tires, brakes and oil to it. Check that timing belt! ;)

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I took your advice and ordered a headunit from Crutchfield - those guys are awsome, install doesn't seem too complicated...I'll drop it later this week. In terms of the timing belt, it looks like I have a chain instead of the belt because its the 2.7L 4cyl...anyways i'll post some pics when i get a chance. I haven't seen too many 4wd base model 3rd gens on here...maybe I'm not looking hard enough but I have yet to see someone with the manual roll down windows...anyways thanks again for the help everyone.
