99 running ruff

I have a 99 4runner with the 3.4L and it seems to be running ruff. When you put it in gear, under a load, it shakes. After you start it up acouple times, the idle gos way down, and dies. Then, you got to pump the petal acouple of times just to make it start again. I pulled out the plugs and they looked fine. I started the engine and pulled the plug wires one by one and the engine got worse each time. (so now i think its not the coils)

Could this be my fuel filter?
The spark plugs wires?
The plugs?
some kinda crazy sensor?

It seems to be shaking and missing, but I don't know!

Im super new to Toyota can somebody please help.

:crybaby::crybaby::crybaby:

My check engine light is not on. When I bought it, the battery was dead. I got a brand new battery and I haven't seen the engine light yet. How long does it take to come.?

Update.

When I pull a plug wire off the engine (while running) the Engine Light does not come on?

I just looked at the spark plugs again, and they are double ground. They look like they might be fouled out.

I pulled the spark plug boot off the plug but left it in the top of the hole and I could see spark from the WHOLE (drivers side) all 3. So does that mean my coils are good?

Any ideas.

If the plugs is fouled, will it throw a code?
If the fuel filter is clogged, will it throw a code?

How many miles does it have?

Spark plugs are due every thirty thousand and you should replace with the correct dual ground plugs.

I would recommend a MAF sensor cleaning if hasn't been done in a while also.

thanks all

I will try the spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, clean MAF and the throttle body and see what happens

I dont understand why my engine light dosent come on!

The engine is running funny and no light, pull a plug wire and no light!

anyone know why?

Update again..........

I just found the check engine light..........and it IS ON............

But

How am I going to get it the the local auto store to run the codes......

is there a way to jump the codes out.........like a chevy

It could be any one of the things people mentioned , if it's not throwing a code it's most likely not anything terrible and a good cleaning and new plugs, wires and you should be good to go.

You should also clean the iac while your in there as that could also be the problem and it would suck to have to pull everything off again to get to it , it's on the underside of the throttle body .

My 99 had stumbling problems and loss of power after a $ 200 trip to the shop and one new coil pack I still had the problem, so I just bought all new plugs and wires did all of the cleaning mentioned above and that fixed it and has been running like a dream since.

Get the denso or nkg plugs and the oem wires which I believe are denso as well .

But start with the cleaning first to save some cash and see if that sorts it out.

Good luck

Yes there is but I don't know the code ,

This changes something as it could be a o2 sensor, tps , or something along those lines .

I'm fairly sure it will be a misfire code though in which case the fix should start at the same place and if your still having issues then start looking at the expensive stuff such as injectors ,fuel pumps, various sensors ect .
