'99...struts are listed instead of shocks, why?

Just looking through parts sites and I keep getting listings for struts on the front of my '99 Ltd. Unless I'm way off, the front is a shock sitting inside a coil spring, right?
Can anyone shed any light on this?
I was thinking of Monroe Reflex all around.
100% on-road, looking for smooth, good handling shock setup.

most people call them coilovers. you can get adjustable height coilovers too. As far as the shock, you get what you pay for...

they can't be struts really struts are a structural part of the suspension, and steering setup.

see the difference to what your 4Runner has on it

so in essence it is a coil over a shock.

While I agree that the 4Runner employs a "coil over", when replacing the shock absorber within the "coilover". Most parts sites and auto parts stores call them "struts". You can replace the whole "coil over" assembly, but you're talking big $$$. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here...

The actual strut is a structural component in the entire suspension piece. Notice how the bottom of the strut assembly attaches to the steering assembly. When the steering wheel is turned left or right, the whole strut and coil spring rotate with the steering knuckle. While the coilover design utilizes upper and lower ball joints to handle the rotation of the steering. I have some Fabtech Dirt Logic 2.5"O.D. coilovers on my Tacoma, and that was the best 800 bones I've ever spent. Adjustable, rebuildable, re-valvable, better sprint rate, better dampening, etc I could go on and on. The few guys here that have coilovers know what I am talking about.
