99 tailgate on a 97 4runner

Hi I am new to the board, and was hoping I might get some help!?! I just replaced my rear lifgate on my 97 4runner limited. The original gate had a wiper, and defogger. The New 99 liftgate is identical however the wiring harness is different. The 97 version had a white plug and a grey plugboth the same size, the 99 version has a gray and a white but the white is smaller and has only four wires where the original had 6 wires on the white plug.

The only thing that is working on the replacement lift gate now is the license plate lights.

Does anyone have a wiring diagrame or know what exactly is different between the 97 and 99 tailgate (or the wiper/window/defroster)?

Any suggestions on how I could get the 99 to work from the 97 harness?

Thanks

Rich

99/97 tailgate electric

Hello,
Did you resolve this issue? We just replaced our 97 liftgate with a 99 and need to correct the same issue.
thank you
halladay

Did you guys ever find a solution? I've recently picked up a '99 4runner that had been repainted, only to find out that the rear lift gate was from a '97. I'm interested to find out if you guys just decided to live with it or if you fixed it.

I'm looking to replace my gate as well and have a lead on a 2002 gate. Can I expect to run into any issues for swapping out? How easy is it to replace the "guts" from my old one into the new one. Lots of rivets to deal with?

Bump, can anyone get me a definitive answer for this situation. I have a 96 but potentially have a 99 tailgate lined since mine is dented. From preliminary reading, I would need to swap my wiring harness and module, but everything else should plug in, however I would love to hear a more definitive answer.

Thanks.

it is several hours worth of work, but just swap the harnesses. be careful as it is fished in there very well. i don't know about the older ones, but my 01 has an electric lock that unlocks all locks, heated glass, power window motor, etc.
swap the harness, relay, etc from the 97 to the other.
