99' Talls , Which Shocks??

I've picked up a pair of 99' Talls for my 99 2wd and the springs are too long for the original front struts it seems. I'm working with a small budget and not wanting an extremely rough ride. Which shocks should I be looking at? I'm assuming I will need to replace the rear shocks as well?

Well, the springs need to be compressed to install into your factory strut assembly.

I went with the Bilstein HD just because they were cheap. They ride fine

Thats understood, but I've got a tech that is flipping his lid saying the ride would be extremely rough and longer shocks are needed. The talls seem to be on coil longer, but it does look like a tight fit.

The stock shocks should be fine. I thought they had the same shocks to begin with anyhow(?). I bought a set of Tokico TrekMaster RT's to go with the 99 talls I bought. They're what Sonoran sells with his 'Best from the Factory' lift.

You can get a set of Tokico TrekMaster RT's on eBay for about $245. You could probably get a set of Monroe's for cheaper than that, but I'm not sure which model of those people recommend.

uumm well there isn't a difference between a 2wd shock and a 4wd shocks, but there maybe a height difference between a 2wd and 4wd truck which may require a different length of shock,

but to directly answer your question no, there's no such thing as a 4wd shock or 2wd shock a shock is a shock.

when looking at shocks you worry about the travel,valving and attachment points beyond that they are all the same.

I took his question to mean "Did the 2wd 4runners come with the same shocks as the 4wd 4runners?". If the 4wd uses a longer shock, then I guess the answer would be yes, if not, then maybe, lol.

I'm not positive about 2wd and 4wd shocks being the same length. I will say that 4wd 4runner front shocks are all the same length, at least close, no matter what brand. If we did use a longer shock then the UCA would come in contact with the coil and also allow too much droop which would allow the CV axle to be over extended.

The more we lift the fronts, the less down travel we get from the new ride height. It's the nature of the beast.
