Hey guys, just finished up this swap and wanted to share all the info I gathered before it left my head. There were a couple other sources of info that I used but neither of them used the stock '99 harness and plugs so here it is. I am not going to do a full step by step as it is mostly unbolt the old one and bolt in the new one. This will mainly focus on wiring. This method requires that you get the 99+ center console harness stub out of the donor vehicle!!
You need the following parts from the 99+:
- Overhead console assembly
- Console/sunroof harness stub (see description below)
- Mirror assembly
- Hardware
The 1998 center console was unfortunately equipped with an entirely useless card holder. If you are equipped with a sunroof, you also have a switch for opening the sunroof and a switch for tilting the sunroof. Sunroof actuation consists of the two switches, a standalone relay and the sunroof motor itself. In addition, the center console has a separate light pod that contains the map lights and two light switches. Here is a diagram of the layout in the 1998:
As you can see in the image above, there ends up being six wires coming out of the main truck harness after removing the old sunroof/light harnessing from the vehicle.
The 1999 center console was equipped with a sunglass holder and has the sunroof relay, switches and light all integrated into one place. The single switch on the console operates both the tilt and slide function on your sunroof. Also, the switch provides single push opening of the sunroof so you don't have to hold it down. Here is a picture and schematic of the 99+ harness stub that you should remove from the donor:
And here are some general steps to do the swap:
1. Uninstall stock center console and map light/mirror assembly.
2. Unplug sunroof relay, which is above the headliner to the right of the opening you just uncovered. This is most easily done with a small flat-head to push the latch up and then pull on the connector.
3. Unplug connector from sunroof motor. This should be right in front of your face.
4. Unwrap harness and identify wires that you will be cutting, DON'T CUT UNTIL YOU KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON.
5. One by one, splice the correct wires together. This should end up looking like this:
The blue wire that is cut and capped is the constant +12V that used to go to the relay. It is unused. I left mine as long as possible in case I needed +12V up there for some reason later.
6. Bundle wires back together and reinstall in the opening, this should end up looking like the picture below:
7. Place 99+ center console in the opening and push against the headliner. Some of the headliner will need to be removed for it to fully install. Mark the headliner and use a box cutter to remove material until the console sits flush.
8. Install the 99+ mirror assembly and the 99+ center console.
