99 Vs. 97 Cat Converters

I am looking to swap over the exhaust (cats and muffler) from my 99 parts car to my 97 as I have a new muffler on it. Anyway, the 97 has one big cat and the 99 has two smaller cats. Is the 99 design better or worse? Does anyone know? I am hoping this will be an upgrade like the 99 MAF was!! Thanks

The two cat design is the California emissions set-up and is certainly more efficient. The '99 Cali front sensor is an air/fuel sensor and VERY different from the one on your car (normal O2 sensor). Therefore you would need a '99 Cali ECU to use that sensor on your car. I have no idea what would happen if you put the '97 sensors/ECU on the '99 cats/muffler. But that's the only way it will work. (Detail: you might also be breaking a ton of Federal and California rules.)

THAT's why you live in CA, it's so much EASIER to do that there (more rules).
