Hi, can anyone advise me which is better, a 1999 Limited 4Runner with 90,000 miles, one owner, clean Carfax or a 2007 SR5 with 103,500 miles? The 2007 is about 5000.00 more than the 1999.
A 1999 Limited or 2007 SR5???

I think the 4th gens (03-10 ish?) are more comfortable and more powerful than the 3rd gens (96-02) they both are great reliable vehicles. test drive both.

That's a hard one. I never cared for the looks of the 4th Gen, but as stated... More power, comfort, new technology.... I've never rode or driven one, but depending on what you want it for, I would lean towards something that's 8 years newer of you can afford it. Up here, I can honestly say I've never seen a 4th Gen fixed up. They are all "soccer moms" driving them.
If you want something for outdoors, exploring, camping, biking.... I would say the '99 is the way to go. Even more so because of only 90K Miles on it!!!!! Mine has 185K and still rock solid (as most on here are).

The 2007 will be less maintenance in the short term, and would be my choice if you are not mechanically inclined. If it has a V8 that would be a bonus.
Coming from IL, check the undercarriage of both with a keen eye for rust.

If you're doing a lot of highway driving the 4th gen is the way to go. Much more comfortable on a long haul, and probably slightly better fuel economy. If you're planning on modifying it and doing some off-roading then it's hard to beat the 3rd gen, especially with that many miles on it.

Drive both and buy the one you like.
Asking strangers an opinion on two cars is like asking your girlfriends whether you should date Bill or Bob. Too many variables, biases and opinions.
And the two you are talking about are really fairly different vehicles. Me? I never liked the squared rear fender wells on the 4th gen, but that is personal taste. I did not own a 4th gen, but I can tell you the 3.4 in the 3rd gen's, taken care of, will survive a nuclear war.
Drive both and buy the one you like.

the 99 looks much better imo. and has more of a 'truck' feel to it.
if you want more of a street car, the 07 is the way to go. the 99 is easier to drive in the city tho, it's smaller and has better visability, which also leads itself to better offroad handling.
go take a look at both and make your own decision.

I agree with blitzkrieg, drive both.
As someone that has had a 98 and just recently bought a 2000 I think Toyota nailed the design with the third gen model. This is why I am on my second and I want to fix it up like cytronus did his. The 4th looks like a bloated whale.
The size on the third gen is also ideal in my opinion. They made the 4th and 5th too large for my liking.
Like the other poster said, maybe the 4th gen is a smoother drive and more comfortable as its newer with better technology.
Also, with the 3rd generation you will probably want to do the engine work that many posters recommend, whereas I am not sure if you have to do the same amount of work with a fourth gen.
The consensus is the engines on the 3rd generations are workhorses. Those are my thoughts, but determine for yourself. And as another poster said, check for rust!! As I got burned and have to do a lot of frame work.

If it's for family and trips 4th gen hands down. If you want a camping rig with the family I would still stick with the 4th gen.
Trails, overland, and dd I would side with the 3rd gen.

Be careful if it has a V8. That motor was also put into tundras up until 2006, in which many people whether it be 4runner or tundra had common problems. My dad had one of the worst where a component within the engine became loose or something and the engine continues to tap. You also will lose horsepower and the V8's are terrible on gas. If you get a 4runner, while the engine is still a Toyota, I think the V6 may have a better standing chance for lasting longer. Take it from someone who knows a bunch of people who have problems with these V8s. lol
