A/C clutch question

Do I need to remove the AC compressor to replace the clutch or is it possible to do it without having to open and evac the freon? It's still R-12 and I don't want to mess with it if possible. I bought a compressor for $40 and I'm hoping I can just swap the clutch out.

D'oh, I wish I could type what I was actually thinking...... No, I am talking about removing the compressor clutch off of the compressor and replacing it without having to remove the compressor from the Runner.

I had a guy tell me "no problem, it can be done, gimme a call". I can't get ahold of him now.
