To tell you the truth I am not sure what it is? All I know is that it is coming from underneath the dash where the fan is located for the A/C and it is defenitly tied to the fan motor as it goes on and off when I turn on and off the A/C fan. Sounds like the bearing for the fan. Guess I need to get under there and see what it's going to take to get to it?

I have exactly the same symptoms. This happened last winter also. Soon as spring arrived the noise went away until just here recently when it started to get cold. Fan works great other than the noise.
I'll try the cleaning procedure that jev2002 posted above next summer (Thanks jev, missed that one on Yota)

Dealer charging $270 for A/C motor replacement - and this is supposed to be half pric
I had my '03 4Runner in for an oil change yesterday. During the service, they came out and told me that the cabin filter needed to be replaced. I said fine, no problem even though it was $29. On my way home from the service, I notice the heat is suddenly not working. I bring the 4Runner back, and they tell me the blow motor is shot, needs to be replaced. My 4Runner has 38,000 miles on it so this is just out of warranty. They tell me they will split the cost of replacing the motor - so my total will be $270. Seems to me if they werent splitting the cost it would be a $540 service job. Based on what I have read, it should take about 1 hour to do this replacement. Doesnt $540 (or $270 for that matter) sound a little steep?
They are also telling me that if the blower motor is not replaced it can affect the transfer case which would cost about $3000 to replace.
Any thoughts on what I should do here?

When you said "the heat is not working", did you mean the fan is not working, or the fan is coming on but the air is not hot. If you meant your fan, and it was working fine when you brought it in, but hasn't worked since you got it back... I'd be suspicious. Check to make sure the connector for the motor is plugged in properly. In case you don't know, the blower motor is underneath/behind your glove box. You can see it by looking up above the passenger side footspace.mooga said:
One hour at the very most. I don't know how much the blower motor costs (I'm sure it's not $500), but the labour portion should be no more than $50. By the way... it's way easy to remove/install the blower motor with basic tools. Maybe you could do it yourself or get a friend to help you.mooga said:
