A/C issues

This is kind of more just a general mechanical question.

So I live in Arizona, and about 2 weeks ago my A/C went out. And let me tell you, mid-summer, in AZ, driving about 150 miles per day is f%&$ing miserable. I took it in about a week ago to see what the problem was. Guy told me the compressor was totally out. Said he'd replace it for $1000. I said "Uh, I'm not paying that, goodbye." So I've been trying to figure out what to do. The part itself is $150 on Amazon. But the other day, I step into my car, and I felt like turning the air on just to have some movement, and iT WAS COLD. I enjoyed every minute of it, and after a 45 minute drive, it staying on blowing cold the whole time. Unfortunately, I had to stop for gas. I turned off my vehicle, and when I came back to turn it on after filling up, the air was burning hot again. I thought that if the compressor was totally broken, cold air wouldn't be able to come out in the slightest. Could something else be wrong with the A/C, and that guy was trying to sap me for as much money as possible?
