I have an 02 Limited 4x4 and when I use the A/C it works great, however it makes a load dull screaming noise at random. I turn the A/C off and of course it goes away. This does not matter what speed I am doing, but on the hwy I can slip it in to N and tuen the A/C back on and then slip it back into draive and it is fine. But the noise will come back. ANd yes the A/C continues to work even with the noise. Does anybody know where I can start before the Stealership gets involved?

Sounds like either the compressor is locking up or the A/C clutch is slipping. From the way you describe it by putting it in neutral and turning on the A/C and back in drive, it doesn't make the noise. That tells me that the A/C clutch is slipping. Either need a new clutch, or need to put smaller spacers between them.

Well they might be right, but the dealers way of fixing it right is of course replacing the entire compressor and clutch. You should try and look at your A/C clutch, if there is a big gap between the clutches then i would respace the clutch. If that is ok then the bearings in the compressor might be going out. Like i said from everything you have described to me it sounds like a clutch problem, not the compressor.
When my 4runner's A/C fuse kept burning on me, $1200 is what the dealership here quoted me, They told me that the clutch was gone and it warped the compressor and that i will need to replace all this stuff, well i didn't have the money and so i went out and bought a compressor and clutch. In the process of doing so i found my problem, the electromagnetic on the clutch was shorting out on the compressor and causing it to short out and blow my fuse. In short terms they might just be ripping you off.
