A/C on off about every 60 seconds. how bad is this?

Hey guys, my 2003 V8 Sport seems to have an air conditioning issue.

I set the fan to 3, temp to Lo.

About every 60 seconds it blows warm air for a few seconds. I think the compressor is turning off for just a few seconds. Is this a sign of a problem that will be getting worse? I don't recall this happening last summer. Any advice is welcome.

A lot of shops will do a free A/C check. I might pull in to one and have them look at it.

Short cycling. Hopefully it's just low on freon.

You may just need a new relay. There is a thread regarding this somewhere on the forum. The fog light relay and compressor relay are the same and you can correct this by swapping them or buying a new one. Dealers charge about $80 for it, but you can buy the same relay at AutoZone for about $12.00 I'll try to find the thread for you.

I had a co worker with an 04 and she had the same problem. We swapped the fog and A/C relay and solved the problem.

My '03 V8 SR5 started doing the same thing a couple weeks ago. I had the dealer do a system evac and found the freon level was fine. For good measure, I swapped out the relay even though it was replaced a few months ago, but problem still persists.

I'm not a mechanic, but this is the same issue my old cherokee sport had years ago, and the problem ended up being the a/c compressor. I called a couple local parts stores and the Denso brand compressors are backordered with no definitive ship dates, which makes me wonder if the compressor is the problem on my 4R.

If I leave the a/c on Auto & temperature on LO nonstop, the truck eventually cools down and is comfortable, however the fan blowing at full speed is annoying on my hour commute.

I'll keep you posted what I find..

Toyota issued technical service bulletin EL011-05 on June 3, 2005 to address inoperative A/C issues related to the A/C magnetic clutch relay (for those toyota vehicles equipped with a magnetic clutch compressor). This includes 2002-2004 T4Rs.

Basically there is a need to replace the factory installed relay (white color; part # 90987-02022) with the countermeasured relay (grey color; part # 90987-02028).

I have had the problem of the A/C light flashing, and the A/C goes from blowing cold air to blowing warm air. Replacing the relay has since solved my problem.
