Getting ready to get back to school in Missoula here in about a week...looooong a$$ break. Too long. Ordered some stuff for the 'runner, as it is sitting in the parking lot at school right now, and I am states away...silicone intake/vaccuum hoses, led back up lights and other miscellaneous parts are waiting to be installed. But until then, some questions that you guys may help me answer.
First up, valve noise. Or what I think to be valve noise. Not too apparent around town unless I punch it, but definitely noticeable when revving tough to get on the freeway/maintain speed. The noise is a ticking sound, not crazy loud, and very rhythmic and repetitive. It's coming from directly in front of me when I am driving (maybe a little to the left but not much) so I am assuming it is the valves. Again, doesn't sound like its going to explode, but definitely gets my attention if driving with no music/conversation etc. Have any of you had this problem/noise before? Was it something other than the valves? I've heard that this may be a problem associated with bad valve gaskets on other vehicles but not really 4runners.
As for the second question, it sort of ties into the first. I simply don't know if my engine is the original engine. Any quick ways to tell? The 4Runner does have a rebuilt title, and 240k plus miles on the body, but I don't know if the engine is replaced or not. Upon purchasing it, I thought it was the original but I was wondering if there was any sort of check I could do with engine VINs, etc.
