A.D.D or Automatic Disconnecting Differential

My 94 runner has the A.D.D on the diff and I was wondering if it was better to have the manual locking instead, what is involved in changing this over? Can I just disconnect the vacuum lines and power source and install the manual hubs? Other information This runner had a 3.0 motor with a automatic trans I'm changing it over to a 22re with a 5sp. I guess my question is, can I leave the ADD and lose the automatic stuff and go to the manual locking hubs.

There's a couple write-ups on Yotatech about Manual hub conversions. Best to do it with factory Aisins. If you can't find them from a wrecker check out Wab Fab or Marlin. Doesn't matter what powertrain it's in, you can still do manual hubs conversion.

Manual locking hubs are nice because you'll save wear on the CVs and less drag; might pick up a MPG. IIRC also a quick back up in reverse will take you out of 4x4 so rocking yourself out can be tricky sometimes. The only ****ty thing is you have to get out and lock them every time, or if you bury your truck well...yeah.

i converted a front ifs ADD out of a 1991 4runner so it would work with my 1987 that has manual hubs last week. it was actually really easy to do and im glad i did because the next day we got 13" of snow. the only thing i did different was i cut some brake tubing just big enough to fit in the gap and then used a metal hose clamp and clamped those down to the fork rod. that way it wont ever slip back over
