A few 2005 4WD Q's

Hey everybody, I know I haven't gotten time to formally introduce myself, but I need some more knowledge before I make a decision on a potential issue I noticed with my 4WD.

I've got a 2005 V6 Sport Edition with around 83K miles on it and with winter coming around I've gotten back to using 4H and even 4LO a bit lately. However I've noticed 4H has gotten quite sluggish at engaging/disengaging and was wondering if it is of immediate concern. Usually, as the manual states as well, it should take less than 5 seconds. Just this morning I was at times cruising for maybe 15-20 seconds (driving straight) before 4H engaged or disengaged, the whole time both CDL and 4WD flashing. Now wanting to take advantage of the warranty should I need to, is this something that needs to be looked at?

Thanks, I'm headed up to VT soon and NJ is expecting more snow when I come back so it's sort of important.

And I almost forgot, when I was messing with 2H and 4H, I had her in 4LO and noticed there was no longer beeping sounding, is that only when its in the transition from 4H to 4LO? I remember it being on the entire time the car is operating in 4LO.

Welcome to the board. Not sure on the 4H if its an issue. Mine does the same if I havent engaged the 4wd in a while. Mines out of warranty so I havent worried about it. It still works just sluggish like you said. I have found that the more I use my 4wd the faster it is to engage during the next use. As for the beeping into 4lo. It beeps when 4lo is transitioning and sould stop once engaged. The beeping will however continue if the truck is not in neutral or park as is required to engage 4lo.

One thing I've noticed about my own 4Runner is that it will never engage into 4wd on the fly unless I'm coasting. In other words, if I'm driving up the road and I shift into 4wd on the fly, the 4wd will not actually engage until I have my foot off the gas pedal and I'm coasting down the road.

So if I were driving up a long hill and my foot was on the gas pedal the whole time, the 4wd light would just keep flashing until I got to the top of the hill and took my foot off the gas pedal. At that point, it will go into 4wd immediately (or at least 2 or 3 seconds).

That's why I've made it a habit to engage 4wd as I'm coasting to a stop. Or sometimes I engage it while sitting still. If you put it in 4wd while you're stopped and it won't engage, just move up or back a few feet and it should engage right away.

Colder ambient temperatures could make it a little sluggish if you're doing the switch before the transfer case fluid has a chance to warm up. Also the advice on making the switch while you're just coasting is good, I never switch it while on the gas, only while coasting, and it always switches within a few seconds.

Thanks everybody, I figured the cold would make sense, but after cruising around for about an hour and trying it again, even while coasting it was beginning to take several minutes to go from 2H to 4H and back. I see an appointment in the future, hope its not serious :ybrick:
