A Few 4th Gen Questions...

I really love how the 4th gen Sport Editions look. Would it be safe to buy one with high mileage (around 100k mikes)? I hear the XREAS suspension fails at higher mileage and begins to leak. If it does start to leak/fail, is the car still driveable or is the handling really bad?

I really prefer a V8 but, if I do get a V6 with a 4 speed transmission is it really that big of a difference in terms of power/fuel economy compared to a 5 speed?

Yes to the bold. Don't listen to anyone who says otherwise...they're smoking something.

100k miles is not a lot. If it's a V8 check that the WP and TB have been done. XREAS is hit or miss - some fail, some don't. There will be obvious fluid leakage from one of the shocks if it has failed. I'm at about 72k and will replace it soon with something else due to degraded ride quality with no signs of flat out failure.

Check for under body rust and ensure that 4lo engages properly.

Funny though, a lot of folks on t4r.org have problems with the V6's while on Tacomaworld, the folks there make the V6's seem like theyre the fastest greatest engine ever. Are the 4runner and Tacoma V6's engines made in different plants or something?

I got roughly 120,000miles (not sure exactly cuz we run kms up here) on my xreas and it doesn't leak, and that's with it being driven for years on salty roads!

Nope... Same 1GR-FE engine.

But then again on the 2nd Generation Tacoma ('05 - present) there's the v6 or I4...

It's not a matter of "is there a difference". It's a matter of.."Does the V6 have enough power for me??" I'm sure a Corvette LR-1 V8 has a LOT MORE POWER then V8 4runner...But do you NEED it.

Do I need the V8? No. Do I want it - hell yes, for many reasons.

Lol. Yes, been argued many times. As an FYI, I have a v8 and LOVE it and wouldn't trade it for the world. But please know that tbe t4r v6 engine is a fantastic engine! One that would suit just fine. Haven't heard of too many major problems, and definately not much with head gaskets. Plenty of get up too. Honestly, with no load/etc, a v6 next to a v8 at a light, the 8 is barely faster. The joy is the awesome torque and pulling, effortless and the smooth + quiet motor with the 8.

Just didn't want you to get the wrong idea. Its been said many times, but I'll say again, that the 6 is a great motor!

But I do loooove my v8.

2 days after I took possession of my 05 V8 Runner, I was at a light headed to the movies.

Another 4runner pulled up. A 4th Gen, V6. He did the "Rum, rum".. and I figured he wanted to dance. I wasn't going to, but the teenager in me kicked in. As the light turned green, I gave my truck a good push forward just to see what he would do. He floored it and I figured, alright, it is on. And I gave my truck the hammer. Shot past him...

Everyone was laughing. Having a good time, until we heard something explode from the other 4runner and he came slowed way down.

I was soon swallowed by traffic, and I was never able to tell what happened. I really hope I didn't help him break something.

I am older. Past my teenager years by a bunch, but I was caught on a pretty day with the windows down and had just purchased the truck...

I don't care how old I get, and I bet I'm a good bit older than you, when somebody pulls up next to me and wants to go, no matter what I'm driving I'm going to give it all I got. My Dad was the same way and so is my 32 year old son. Not sure my daughters aren't that way too. It's in the blood.

This is assuming there is no danger and traffic is light and my wife is not in the car. Sometimes I still do it with her in the car, but not as much. Just nothing like trying to jump somebody off the line, or when somebody jumps you off the line and you floor it and pass them. Turbo Volvos are great at the latter.

The V8 4th gen is a sleeper. It's 1st gear is so low and so short it can keep up with many cars that are faster. The torque is instantaneous, almost all of the torque is available at 1800 RPM....it just moves.

I've smoked new 2.0T A4's, on the highway from 70-limiter and from the get go and countless other BMW's, Mercedes, and even kept up with a rather new 6.0L GTO until 2nd gear. My favorite is the bros who drive Si's with teh V-Tech stickers.

And yes, I drive cars that are faster than the 4Runner so I'm not talking out of my ass.

Umm my V6 is a 5 speed.

Regardless it's a Toyota and 100K miles is just broken in. V8 or V6 you can't go wrong.

I would disagree with what you posted from my personal experience. I raced a new VW GTI with the same 4cyl 2.0L turbo motor and got beat very easily in my 05 V8 4x4 limited 4runner. This was from a red light basically 0-50mph.

I guess I am completely unaware of this "Head Gasket Problem"?? I've been lurking around T4R since 05 and never seen that thread??? I have 120K on my 04 and have driven it like I stole it from day one. Worst issue Ive had is a bad rear wheel bearing. It also has the 4 speed tranny and is 2WD and I regularly get 350(17.5MPG)-400(20MPG) miles on a tank of gas, with a high of 475miles(23.17MPG) on a long road trip once. All 05 and up have the 5 speed tranny regardless of engine. They all have 3.73 gears also. 03-04 V6s had 3.91s (3.909) 4wd or 2WD. My 04 was always faster than my 08, granted it was 4wd, lifted, with one size larger tires. Mileage on my V6 08 was never over 19 MPG Highway, even when it was stock. A max of 325 (16.25MPG) miles on a tank was the norm.

One more quick note: All 4runners are assemblied in Japan. Most Tacomas are assemblied in the US, Mexico, or Canada. Maybe the 4Runners are generally better based on that???

In general yes. In terms of Quality control, the Japenese are number 1. There is a classic story of a Japanese sub contractor working with, I believe Motorola, on an product. Motorola sent a contract and order to the Japanese company with the very common "defect" ratio. Something like 1 defect per 1000 or something like that. This was there acceptable ratio. On delivering the part to Motorola they sent a letter stating that, as ordered, they had made 999 functional and 1 defective, but couldn't understand why.

Simply put. In Japan, they have 0 tolerance for defect. Yes, defects occur, but they don't accept it like we do.

So. In terms of quality, it isn't technology. It isn't infrastructure.. it is mentality. When you have a culture built on a mentality of 0 defects, they are much more stringent.

America has high quality standards. Higher than most of the world.. but not as high as the Japanese.

I like my 4Runner quite a bit, but if what you say is true, I need to get some work done on it. There is no way in hell that 4Runner would come close to keeping up with my BMW or my Volvo. It might get the Volvo off the line for about 25-50 feet due to Turbo lag, but that's about it.
