Im new to this forum so hello everyone:). I drive a 1999 4runner BASE. all stock! There are a few things that are broken on my car and i want to get those fixed before i buy other mods, so i was wondering if you guys could tell me how much it would cost to fix. First off, my radio antenna is bent, it wont go down. just stay in the up position. Second, my Gas Gauge is broken and just tells me i have a full tank the whole time. and Last, my front bumper is destroyed so i checked out Certifit and they list one for the SR5 model so i wasnt sure if that would fit on my runner. i would really appreciate it if someone could give me an estimate on those costs. thanks guys

Search tacoma whip mod for a solution to the antenna, SR5 will work fine at certifit, they are both chrome. IDK about the gas gauge. Welcome.

The antenna looks pretty bent to me so im thinking im going to need a new one, when i turn the car on or off, or the radio on or off, i can hear the antenna motor running but it dosent go down.

Ya if u do the tacoma mod itll be worth it in the end bc u dont have to deal with the stupid motor and mast breaking or dying from old age. Trust me i had it and broke mine mudding and hit a tree branch. I replaced the mast and it gave me problems about a month after. Save urself the time and effort.

x2 on that bumper fitting.

Here's the link to the Taco whip antenna mod. I just did this a few months ago following these instructions and it worked great. It's a bit of a contortionist act getting the wire into the passenger footwell and to the back of the radio, but can be done with a bit of patience.

The "Taco" Whip Antenna Mod

Good luck.

For the gas gauge, there's a TSB from Toyota on some models where the dash cluster needs to be replaced. Quick search here should be able to find it.

mines also base as hell. when i got mine, it also had a bent antenna. i replaced with an OEM one instead of the taco whip mod, I hate fixed antennae.

If you want to see a full list of what I've done (keep in mind mine was base model and all sorts of ****ed up) check out my cardomain for full mod list and all sorts of stuff.

im confused, are you satisfied with your new antenna or do you not like it? nice runner by the way. I also had another question for you guys, if i buy a tow hitch, will i be able to bolt it on directly or will i have to buy some brackets and whatnot? im planning on buying one pretty soon

if u get one that will fit ur rig then it should just be bolt on. Mine came with one from the dealorship but my cuz needed one so we just got one and bolted it right up. Should be the same for urs also.

I like OEM retractable. I don't always use the radio so I hate having it up if I dont need it.

The tow hitch (as mine didn't come with one either) doesn't bolt up unless you get the correct brackets. The bolts holding up the hitch go into a special bracket located on the inside of the frame. The bracket is separate.

The bracket is essentially a piece of metal with two nuts welded to it.

You may want to try CL, ebay, or even sending a few PMs to people with custom rear off road bumpers. I know I'll be selling my tow package when I get my tire carrier rear bumper, just don't know when that will be yet..

Pikeman on here is a very cool guy, he might still have his tow package to sell??

Nah, I bought Pikemans rear bumper, then sold my old bumper to the guy who bought Pikeman's tow package.

I'll sell my tow hitch receiver but it's missing one of those brackets to bolt into that slides into the frame. It looks really good though, i painted it black and it's got a hitch cover.

Here's what it looked like when I had it on a while ago, it's in my garage now.

The 1999 4Runners are known to have problems with the fuel sending unit. A true fix will require dropping the gas tank and replacing the unit with a newer one (2001 in my case). Then you will have to recalibrate the voltage for the guage on the dash to get a correct reading. Not easy, not cheap. I'm sure there are some cheap fixes out there, but the problem is with the part, so replacing it will be the surefire way to keep problems from recurring.
