Yeah, I have had a replacement filter since last year but havn't been able to put it on. I am expecting to bust my lines taking it off because of rust, so I need to have a back-up ride in place before I do this. Hopefully soon though. With the rust I had on the filler pipe, I am sure that my filter is pretty bad.

Start applying some PB Blaster now. Once it's had time to work a while, wire brush around the exposed threads as best you can. Then more PB.

Yeah, I have used a couple cans of PB on the vehicle already. It doesn't always work it's magic the way I'd hope though, so I have learned to plan for the worst. It's either have a back-up ride, or just buy the replacement parts.

for all of you having "trouble" getting your fuel filter off.....
i tried 4 times with the "right tools" until i said f it and grabbed a pair of vice grips, gloves, and an extra order of elbow grease. clamp them bad boys down as tight as you can (for real, the tightest you can get em) and break her loose. a nice soaking of PB blaster is def a must too. pref no less than 6 hours ahead of time. thats all i had to do. sprayed on at lunch time in work parking lot, went home, cracked it loose.
good luck, it made a HUGE difference. but i think i need another one already because of trash in my tank.
oh, and nelson, i know u got alot of rust action going on. . . but my fuel lines were pretty bad (imo) and it worked. id try the vice grips.worst case senario you cant get it off at all and round off the flare nut. filter will still be there doing what it used to supposed to do. . .

Put some hot sauce on the rust on the bolts it helps I did this when replacing my fuel filter

Would the vice grips eliminate the need for the crow's foot wrench. I don't have such a wrench. I always wondered what they were for. Also, how much gas pours out of the filter/lines if you unscrew the gas cap first? How much did you pay Toyota for the part? I just replaced fluids and did tune up as my '00 has reached 143k. It still seems new to me!

Get a 14mm craftsman wrench (less than ten dollars). Ingenuity, will carry you so far. Having the correct tools for the job is priceless.
Maybe half a qt. of fuel. Pull EFI relay, crank for 5 secs, open fuel cap to relieve pressure.
I think the filter was about 40-50 dollars.

As per advise on my fuel filter thread I went with a napa gold (wix) for $21. I've used wix oil filters and air filters and it's pretty much the only other brand for filters I use besides OEM.

If you mean you are going to use vice grips instead of the proper wrench for the flared fitting then - no. The vice grips can/will bugger up the flared nut and that means a new line. There is a very valid reason that flared wrenches are made and this is one. You can get a cheap set at harbor freight.
x2 at Napa, just bought one today
will attempt it tonight, but had to PBlaster it cause I am afraid the front side is little dirty and such.
hope i dont create a problem. lol
