A horrible way to start the year......

This is so sad and way off topic but I feel like I need to let you guys hear this in case you know somebody like this.

A guy moved into our neighborhood, four houses up from me, about a year and a half ago. Single guy, very quiet and kept to himself. His house and yard were always in perfect condition. I would try to make eye contact with him as I drove down our street just to wave, but he never really gave that chance.

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago I had noticed some flyers accumulating on his mail box. I had mentioned to my wife about them and that is was odd, but since there weren't ever any lights on in the house and it looked pretty shut up, I was assuming he might be in the military and had been deployed or maybe he was off doing some sort of training.

Wednesday night I was taking out the trash and noticed a bunch of cras up there in front of his house and just thought somebody was having a party. When I turned around to walk back in I noticed some of the cars were cop cars. I walked down there and asked if something had happened and the lady said there had been a death. I asked her if it had been a while and she said yes. I didn't ask her anything else and walked home. I fealt horrible, but it got even worse.

The next day I talked to his neighbor to see if she know any more. Apparently he had died in his sleep in Septemeber................yes, September, this was December 28th. He was in his mid-fourties, both parents were dead, no brothers or sisters and he had never been married. It was a cousin that he had listed on a car loan that had received a notice that his payments had stopped, so they came over and had found the body.

It is just so sad that he was so intraverted that nobody ever got to know him and that nobody noticed he was missing for so long. If you know of anybody like this, try to make a effort to get to know them. It is just so sad.

Wow, that is terrible. It is scary that nobody wanted to know where he was for Christmas. That is such a young age for somebody to have a heart attack at.

Yeah, he seemed like he was in good shape. i mean he wasn't over weight. I tlked to his cousin today and they said he was pretty healthy. They said they had always tried to include him in stuff but he just never really did anything. i guess some people just prefer to be alone, but it just doesn't seem right. My wife and I feel horrible, because we walk by there every day. She said she saw his cat in the window not too long ago........the cousin said today they could tell the ca had not been dead too long.

Pretty sad.

In fact, on my last shift in the ER, I had a young 37yo female come in who had chest pain for a couple of hours after work, so her family drove her to the ER. On arrival, she became unresponsive. Turns out she was having a big MI and went into V-fib arrest. We managed to bring her back with several shocks and medications, and I think she is doing OK now. She may actually walk out of the hospital in a few days with a brand spankin new internal defibrillator.

The scary thing about this is the patient's age! She is only 37!!!! I'm only 2 yrs older than her! Geez, 37yo people, especially premenopausal females, should NOT be having the "big one"! Granted, she was mildly obese, but other than that she had NO risk factors for CAD.

Wow. Stuff like this just puts everything about life into perspective. I know it sounds cliche, but more reason to enjoy life while we still can. More of a better reason to take better care of ourselves.

My family and I were celebrating our grandfather's birthday at his house this past Monday. About 7pm we heard fire trucks becoming louder and louder. Lo and behold, the SFFD shows up next door. My uncle being a San Francisco firefighter himself goes outside and talks to some of them. Turns out my grandparents' neighbor lives alone and suffered from poor health problems. She is elderly and keeps to herself, her husband passed away a while back too. I can't possibly imagine being alone like that, very sad if not frightening. On a good note she was ok. They took her to the hospital to get checked out to be on the safe side. But to be all alone like that without loved ones is so sad.
