a little advice please

ok guys ive been a part of this forum for a while but mostly stick to classics and 3rd gen as thats what i have. but my fiance got in a wreck with our 97 and more than likely totaled it. and im looking at getting her a 4th gen for traction control pretty much the only reason for moving up. how do you guys think it works? is it worth moving up for that reason? thanks guy have a happy new year

I have only had a 05 v8 and it worked for my wife on snowy roads and such always kept her safe. I used the heck out of the "all track" off roading and it works well
I would suggest getting a 07 or newer so you will have the traction control disable if you need it

I'd love to but I'm only 19 so I won't be able to get newer then 05

There is a fascination with that disable button. You don't need it. I would try to get an '06 if at all possible for the newer style headlights.

The trac control on those suck they are more dangerous then help and truely id love to get her into a 4.0

If your looking to buy a certain vehicle just for the traction control then you should be looking at crossover's with awd. I have mixed feelings of the traction control bs my 4th gen has. It worked well for me one time and kept me from a possible accident in Steamboat Springs when it was snowing and i changed lanes with a bit too much pressure on the skinny pedal. I started to lose the back end when the traction control kicked in and straightened me right out. Alternately I was crossing a busy road once when it was really icy and I needed some wheel spin to get over it but the traction control took away my throttle input and cars literally had to go around me. So it is nice when it works and saves your butt. I'm just old school and I like more control over whether I need to spin my tires or not. I have O2 sensors going out so it usually comes in code 0420 and kicks out all that traction control stuff. I have a bluetooth obdII tool that hooks up to my phone and I can reset that code if im on the highway and it goes away for a couple days. I just usually leave the code in so I can have a little fun when it snows.

I refuse to own a crossover we had a highlander for a little bit and couldn't stand it. Slid all over under powered and just didn't like the way it drove. But really like the 4th gens.

The 4th gen is night and day in terms of stability IMO over prior generations. I've had them all. Your best bet will be a V8 with AWD, as its full time 4wd. Nothing the lady will have to do rain or shine to ensure the truck is most fit for conditions. The throttle killer can be disabled by locking the center diff if wheel spin is desired. Compared to a 3rd gen (01/02 excluded, never drove those) or prior with no traction control, the 4th gen is a breeze to drive in the foul weather.

:iagree: Well said, IMHO. As I have owned every gen(With the exception of a 5th gen., but have driven one for a few days.)

Yeah, I recommend the 4gen V8 as well. Got winters on them and the truck is a tank in snow. In ice, it's still good, you just need to drive sensibly. Whatever you get, please put winters on! It's a great investment compared to the cost of an accident!

thanks all as ive said theres not a lot of options here so if theres a 4.0 in our price range ill get it i really want to get away from timing belts too. and the 4.0 you can put into full time when needed.
