A little weekend painting

I took some time this weekend and painted the exposed frame and rear differential with two coats of gloss black and one of clear coat. I also painted the skid plate with 4 coats of gloss black and two of clear coat. I've got a couple pictures here, but because of the black, it was hard to get anything to look half as good as it does in person. It turned out much better than I ever thought. My Dad's still shocked everytime he see's my truck, he never thought he would see me take this good of care of any vehicle. It's easy when you finally get a vehicle you not only enjoy driving, but really like the overall features.

Hey thanks, I gotta be honest... once it was done and I stood back and took a look, it was better than I thought. The pictures really doesn't do it justice, the bare frame hangin down there really turned out nice with the gloss finish.

btw - I would like to get the lettering on my mud flaps back to a nice white, but they are rubber. Anyone have an idea what I could use to paint the letter white with?

looks great I have done the same thing but after a couple PA winters I have to re-paint under my truck too.

I hated the mud flaps on our 4runner they are road salt traps.
I took mine off because the same thing happened to mine( white paint coming off) so I just removed them the truck looks allot better without them on.

yea sweet paint job, from what u can see, i bet itll look real awkard if any1 looks underneath it, suppose they drop a quarter ??? lol but great job, i say u finish it sometime

Looks good - When I had my old rig (96Ranger) I would paint the underside all the time. I would an Easwood's rust stoping frame pait that was a flat black. I had a body lift as well as a 4 in SL so you could really tell when the underside was getting buggered up from beach driving or wheeling.

I still wipe down my frame abouve the wheels when I clean my new runner. I like to keep things looking good too.

How did you prep it and what kind of paint did you use? Did you sand or prime or anything before spraying the paint?

I want to get my tow hitch looking better. It's in awful shape and is much more visible than the pieces you did.

You've probably already taken care of this as this thread is a bit old but...
I painted my mudflap lettering with a paint pen. I used silver instead of white. It looked good unless you got real close. It's super quick but you'l have to redo it about once a year.

Oh yeah, yours looks great.

I washed the parts down real well and made sure they were dry, then I simply painted them with three coats of some good Glack gloss enamel paint from Wal-Mart. Once completed, I then covered it with two coats of gloss clear coat.

NOTE!!!
I had to paint my parts on the truck, so I found a large piece of cardboard that I could hold up between the truck and where I was painting so I got no overspray. "IF" you have to paint the parts on the truck, make sure and do it on a day with no wind.

When I wash my truck, I still wash the areas I painted and even after being off-road, it still looks good.

What about Nerf Bars

I have the silver factor nerf bars on my 02 sport that are a silver. I was thinking about taking them off, removing the black plastic molding, sanding them down, and then painting them black to match a black center guard and black Yakima roof rack. Do you think this would be a good idea to do? Will the paint stick? You would step on the parts that have plastic trim so I do not think it would chip up too much. Any opinions or ideas? Thanks.

EDGE - I spray painted and no, I just hadn't thought of that until now. I might look around for some gloss paint that sticks to rubber.

jvangun - I'm not sure if that's a good idea. If it is metal and you step on it, you probably want to go have it dipped so it doesn't wear off.

HomeDepot sells paint to paint plastic, just got to clean it good get some kind of plastic primer and go.

Once again truck looks hot and it's awesome to know that MickeyMouse is a 4Runner owner
