Live from the new man cave....

My third rack by GOBI... this one was designed specifically around the roof top tent of which I have on order. Its been on order for 7 months now.... I was told Jan 7th 2013 for arrival, so fingers crossed.

Anyways here's a live sneak peak of a lot of wiring and the new rack installed!

Pat...you're not be nosy at all. The tent is a Columbus Variant by Autohome. The first attempt for delivery was September and it was "damaged in the process" whatever that means... therefore never shipped. I have been waiting since, patiently...well-ish. To be honest I think they wait to fill orders up so the shipping is cheaper for there own stock inventory. Thats just my theory!

Sorry Andrew.... Guess you'll have to get a new rack!

Yes, get one, do it, you know you want one!!

I decided with the Columbus because of the height. I thought it would be nice to sit up and still have room to breathe. Also in bad weather to change clothing etc... I did mountains of research and have tested both models out for comparison at the overland expo.

There's some insight for you.... Now go and get one!

I decided to make this my new thread. Its will primarily consist of images and maybe, just maybe a write up or to. A little disclosure about the images here and there use. So heres the new GOBI rack Mebe4running style.... Its basically the stealth rack just without the top bar. More pic's to come....

I think you'll be stoked with your choice of the Columbus. I had one on my HDJ81, loved it. My wife and i toured around quite a bit in it through nothern Canada. We had the extra long length, small width version. I'm 6'6", and we fit perfectly up there. The extra height was of the columbus was great, nice to be able to stand up and get changed, and cracking the top of the rear door for some air circulation was good. What size did you order? Curious to know what the best fit for the 4runner would be. Mine fit the roof of the 80 series almost perfectly. I miss it, but we sold it when we bought a small trailer to make camping with kids easier. We had a couple small trips when our oldest was a few months old, but it got too cramped for 3. Hah.

You gotta post some more pics showing the ARB! I had one on my cruiser and loved it, but i can't pull the trigger on one for the 4runner. I keep seeing pics where it looks awkward, and other pics where it looks awesome (your truck). Looks like you've owned yours for a while now, any regrets?

Thank you for your kind words! I am longing for the arrival of my Columbus Varient which is a small but extra long in length. It's going to extend the length of the roof rack by 3" and hang out on the sides by 2" on the 4runner.

The ARB has been a love hate relationship. In fact I almost sold it to a member here as I was going to go for a hidden winch mount at one stage. Times changed though. There are two things that bother me on the bumper. First is the 10mm screws that hold the skid plates. The thread on the screws get worn out very quickly from off road debris and as a resultI have had to replace two female screw in ends on the stock skid as the thread has worn through. Second is it moves quite a fair bit. Though over time you get used to it. I love the way it sticks out as far as function. It also allows for ample room to access your winch. Tight trees this bull bar is your friend and saved me many a times. The build overall is outstanding and leaves plenty of room for flex. Would I buy another one to put on my 4runner, yes.
 
Long weekend ahead... pun intended!

Well, here down south y'all we have been having a lot of rain! In fact three straight days of it! It finally stopped this morning. I went to open the rear hatch of the door to find.... go on, guess? Yep, that's right water; how much? Enough to cause mold issues down the line in the future that's for sure. Problem occurred as a result of an aftermarket install which I only have myself to blame! The first source of the leak was from the the rear hatch door grommet that holds the wiring for the rear window, wiper, door lights, speakers etc... I tapped into this with my rigid light wiring and left a hole clearly big enough for water to seep in. The second source is still to be determined. I believe it entered through the white ventilation covers we have either side of our trucks on lower side of the bumper as it was wet around those areas. However I'm still determining whether or not that was the actual source.

Well the break down has begun.... I'm taking the interior liner out to dry (*need help with the last bit HARPER7?:hail:) and have removed the carpet etc.... It's actually a blessing in:spy:. It is a good chance for me to clean up some wiring and install some sound deadening, which I have been meaning to do for quite sometime.

So got my weekend cut out for me!

**Question for Harper7 or anyone else who has removed their interior liner. What is the best way to disconnect the left interior, a-pillar? I simply wish to reach the two wire harness's for the side curtain airbags and disconnect them. They are both located behind the pillar about half way down. This part is the only part that has stopped my from taking the liner completely out . I'm hesitant because what is stopping me is that black plastic tie, near the top. It look's to be be designed almost if its only meant to be broken in the event of a crash!? So I have left it be until I gather some solid research. Do you happen to know? Would really appreciate any feedback or suggestion!**
