A new Montero?

Looks like Mitsubishi is going to bring back the Montero for the NA market. Hopefully they can give some appeal to what has to be one of the worst model lineups on sale right now. I'm guessing they will simply bring over the overseas Pajero Sport with a facelift and some competitive engines.

Looks Like Mitsubishi Is Bringing The Montero Name Back

I still stare with fascination whenever I see a 94-97 Montero SR. Easily one of my must-haves with the Mitsubishi 3.5(they sounded killer at the Dakar back in the day), Superselect transfer case, factory rear air locker, and aggressive looks.

A friend of mine has a 97 SR. It's loaded. He has offered it for sale to me once and i have kicked myself for not taking him up on it ever since. :der:

glad to see they are bringing back their SUV.
 
I repaired sooo many Mitsubishi's that had valve guide and seal issues back in the day. I wonder if they are making them any better now.

My mechanic tells me about how often he does those on older Montero Sports especially. New Mitsubishi's are so uncommon that I don't even know if they resolved those issues.

I think 1997 is the ideal year of those older Monteros. The single cam V6 in those makes nearly the same power as the prior dual cam but is a ton easier to work on and maintain. How much was he asking?

He still has it, and maintains it meticulously with OEM Mitsubishi parts. No expense spared on this Mitsu. I think he said $8500 and he would gas it up for me before I left Greenville, SC (it's location). Thats been a year or two ago.
 
It's smart to bring the Montero back, but then why give the EVO the axe ?

I owned a 00 Montero Sport and I was able to put 100,000 trouble free miles on it. It was tough as nails and never let me down. I killed it with 250K miles on it doing a burnout (long story). I've seen one with over 400K. If they offer a turbo diesel for the U.S. market in the new Montero I would lose my mind and buy 4 of them tomorrow.
 
The monteros from the late 90s have an attractive body style. When I was younger, I picked up a '94 trooper to beat around with and learn how to work on cars. Hopefully they dont make it some ugly soccer mom car like nissan has been doing

I have a sad feeling that it's gonna be more of a crossover rather then a traditional BOF Montero. I sure hope not, but it seems inevitable since most auto manufacturers are moving in that direction (it's what comsumers are buying) and Mitsu needs to get the game plan right or else it's a definite exit from the North American market.

That's steep. I see some going for 4k on craigslist from time-to-time. But then again, he is using all OEM parts and this is a rather rare vehicle to begin with. I would say the SRs are rarer then FZJ80s. The small NA Montero/Pajero community does not help either.

Good point. As of right now the EVO is the only vehicle in their lineup that is worth looking at. How did you kill off your Montero doing a burnout? :suspicious: You must be hardcore.
 
I know the older Monteros are the ones most people love to off-road, but the exterior styling of the 3rd gen ones always struck me as interesting... I don't know why, but the fender curves and proportions always appealed to me somehow. Though all the ones I worked on had so many issues I kind of stayed away from Mistubishi because of it.

The 3rd gen ones are quite popular overseas for offroading as well. It was definitely interesting in styling. Even more surprising to me was that it was unibody and had fully independent suspension. It worked too.

I was pulling up to my friends apartment complex and the road was a bit damp from the earlier rain. I stopped at the gate and waited for it to open. I peeled out just a bit since I forgot about the speed bump that was touching the front of my worn rear tires and the wet ground. I passed the bump and my friend was outside smoking a cig and he gave me a thumbs up, to which I responded with hoonage. The burnout conditions were ideal and my rear tires were semi bald so I floored my truck and layed down 60 something feet of pathetic rubber marks before my lifters fried and a rod bearing decided to go for a spin. I was emotionally done with the truck anyway, even though I still miss it.

As for the Montero now, it's somewhere in Africa starting a new life with a new powertrain.

Wow. They are exporting Montero Sports too? I thought it was only 3rd Gens. Up here if a 3rd Gen pops up in decent condition for under 4k, it is bought by an exporter within hours of posting and off to Africa! Usually Liberia or Sierra Leone.
 
I had a 2000 Montero Sport and it was a total turd. Leaked everywhere and the trans was going out at 130,000. Got around great but just felt like a piece of junk.
 
I thought mitsibishi wasn't doing too hot in the states. Don't they keep discontinuing models here? And now they're bringing one back?
