A Patriotic Thought...

I also posted this on yota tech in a thread about America and being a patriot, I wanted to share it with you all too!

About 2 days before christmas this year, I was standing in line at the post office waiting to mail my xmas gifts to my mom, dad and sis. I am mailing the gifts because I am not able to go home for christmas for the third year in a row, because I am active duty Navy. This dude in front of me is talking to the person next to him in line bitchin about the war, and how terrible this country is and that the president should be shot..... complaining about how EFFEd up the economy is etc... you get the point. Now, I did'nt say anything, because its really his right to have an opinion, even though it made my blood boil. I knew If I started with him, it would escalate.. so i avoided confrontation, even though it pissed me off to no end.

I was so pissed off when I came home, I actually got inspired. I wrote this short passage to calm myself down. I am by no means a writer, but when I shared it with some friends and coworkers, it spread like wild fire. One of my operations officers mailed it to his home town paper and they printed it on Memorial Day. I wrote this article because I am tired of the way people take America for granted. I didnt write this to piss anyone off, just to make the average american stop and think for one moment about how lucky we are to be Amercans.

Enjoy and post up some feedback!

Any American
Any American that sees an American flag flying gets that immediate and
overwhelming shiver and lump in their throat. Why does the Statue of
Liberty get our American blood flowing? Why does a soldier saluting a
fellow fallen soldier at a funeral choke us up? Why does a sailor
saluting the funeral precession of President Ronald Reagan with tears
streaming down his face stir our inner patriot? How is it that a
stadium of people standing with their hands over their hearts singing
along with the national anthem makes us misty eyed? We all get a
little stirred up when we hear that beautiful song and think of why we
love this nation. How proud are we of our right to fly our nations
flag? We will defend that flag without hesitation. We all have that
love deep down in the core of our being. To have the freedom to
practice any religion, say anything we want, be who ever we want to
be. In America you have every right to succeed. Just provide the
time and motivation and you can accomplish anything. This country
stands up for the things in life that no human being should live
without, peace, honor, liberty and justice. Where would the world be
if America were never established? If no one had the ideals of our
forefathers, where would we be? Who would lead us? What language
would we speak? What would we worship, honor and revere?
It is an honor and privilege to be an American. Some are born into
it, and others work their whole lives to get here. Anyone can make
it in the United States. We are the most desired country to live in on
the face of the earth. We are the most united group of people on
earth. We always have been and always will. Stop and think about why
that is. What makes our country so unique? Our culture is imitated all
over the world. Why do other nations want to be like ours? Think about
all the people in the world that model and govern themselves just like
America.
What makes our symbols so unique and revered? Think about the first
time that you saw an American flag. Think about the first time that
it actually meant something to you. Think about the first time
someone explained to you what a patriot is. Remember the first
patriotic feeling you felt? How can a cloth banner with stripes
alternating colors and a symbolic number of stars motivate a nation of
people on a daily basis. Think about why we feel what we feel when we
see an American flag. Think about what red white and blue stands for.
Think about how people hundreds of years ago felt the same feelings
about that same banner of cloth that gets hoisted in the air every
day. Remember the first time you saw another country or nation burn
that great flag? Why did that infuriate you so quickly? In just one
instant you were ready to defend that cloth banner and nothing could
stop you. How come all Americans can relate to these feelings? Why
is it that everyone who reads this knows exactly what I'm talking
about?
It seems like now in today's world, that we are not reminded every day
what a privilege it is to be an American. We get so busy that we may
forget how hard people have worked and sacrificed for this country to
be that way it is today. I hope this reminds you how fortunate we
are. Think about the true meaning of being an American. Any person
that calls himself or herself an American should strive to make this
nation better everyday. Think to yourself what you did for America
today.

Boaz,

I couldnt agree more with what you wrote, ive always said that no matter what your political pref. is or your opinion on the war in Iraq you should always support our troops. I have nothing but the utmost respect for you guys and everything you do. I have a cousin that just got back from Iraq/Germany (army) and am looking forward to seeing him in a couple of weeks.

Olliebear,

That guy was just an idiot (to put it mildly) he has his "facts" all messed up and cant even follow his own thoughts. Its obvious he has other issues.

Anyway, God bless and Happy 4th!!

I will have to disagree with always supporting our troops, would you support them if you knew they were going into a conflict where we have no reason to be there and knowing there will be a huge amount of innocent casualties, how could you support them for that? Yes they have to folow orders, but they can also choose not to follow orders, they arent machines after all. Taking a innocent human life as an act that nothing can excuse, not even war!

Ok then don't support us. At least you live in a country that allows you to make that decision for yourself.

Have you ever thought of moving to France? You might fit in there.

Ironic isn't it, how those troops are the very ones that originally gave and are preserving your right to disagree.

BTW my article was about being a united america not supporting the troops, did you even read what I wrote? It has some references to the military in it, because those are things that have effected my life since I joined up.

Lime, I hope you realize that most of the "troops" are not affected by your "support" or lack there of. Most of us are simply proud to serve the USA even if you don't support it. At the end of the day we can say we support and defend our country. I am glad you have an opinion, we are all americans here and we have a right to exercise them as we see fit.

I stopped letting people like you bother me along time ago.

I hate getting involved in political internet debating as it normally turns out to be a big waste of time. Learned my lesson before.

However I think you need a bit more context before making statements like that.

It is NOT the troops choice of what needs to get done i.e. war to get involved in. That decision gets made by the politicians! If you have an issue, they are the people to take it up with not the troops. The armed forced simply execute commands given from the top i.e White House.

SO whether you support the decision for the war in Iraq or not, should not influence your support for the people merely serving the country to the best of their ability and some of them ultimately paying the highest price in that duty.

The blood of innocent people should be layed at the door of the White House. The military is a broad sword and should only be deployed with utmost caution, responsibility and as the ultimate last resort. Yet you can't blame the sword for the actions of the hand, now can you?

I think the military did a fantastic job for the hand they got dealt with in Iraq. The fact that they got dealt that hand is a different debate, but they can not be penalized for that.

Please keep the politics out of this. We do not want to start any conflicts here. This thread is about a patriotic thought and supporting the men and women overseas, not about WHY they are there.

I never made any specific remark pertaining to the Iraq war or any past war for that matter. I was simply stating that a uniform,
camo or not does not excuse people from the mistakes they make in this life, Wheter or not your following orders is irrelevant as a human being you make a decision on your actions and we will all be judged accordingly based on those decisions. regardless if we were following orders or not. Why do you folks feel like I am personally attacking you?

My input

Hey Lime "THINK"

Is that what you say, well please think before you act and/or type.

Do you like your 4Runner? Do you like your right to water to wash it? Do you like being able to voice your opininon? Do you like sometimes making uneducated comments? Do you like living in a house? Do you like having the opportunity to pick who you marry? Do you like having an income of more than 400 dollars a year? Do you like having the best medical care in the world?

Do you like being an American citezen? Do you like attending school and getting an education? Do you like hoping on an interstate and going from state to state? Do you like running water and air conditioning in your house? do you like the clothing on your back?

Basically, do you like everything about your life? I'm sure you do, as do I, and I show that everyday by suiting up in my military uniform and driving on the roads of "Free" Germany, a land that was "invaded" us jsut 50 years ago, now one of the most successful democracy's there is.

In my military career, where I am not a machine to quote you, I have had some advantages that you probably haven't. I've seen every single thing that I have mentioned not being granted to people. I've seen women in vails, not by choice, I've seen starving children, I've seen poverty on a Marble street, literally. I've been to many 3rd world countries and brother, you don't know what you've got, believe me.

The lack of support for your troops shows me a thing or two about you, it doesn't make me dislike you, it doesn't make me angry, but it makes me sad. It really does, its sad because I don't think you've truly expereinced being an american, suffered enough perhaps? I don't know, but I've suffered enough for both of us, and I've seen freinds die at the hands of "innocent" people. Don't support me, thats your right, a right that I protect every single day. In the last 100 years, I've lost about 8 family members whom none of which I knew that protected that right. One thing they had in common though, they died over there.

They died over there because we went first, we possibly jumped the gun because of the intelligence taht we had. I can give you one example of when we didn't jump the gun, and we paid dearly, it's a little place called Hawaii, I'm sure you know of it, and hopefully you paid enough attention to know what I'm refering too.

I took an oath when I joined the military and have 3 other times since, each time I reenlist, it covers why we die for unappreciative people. And I'll die tomorrow if it meant a better life for you, even though I don't know you, I'd die in that sand drenched land, or that rainforest, or that beautiful Nile river.

I will make the ulitimate sacrafice if needed be so that you can get on the forums and publicly show your dislike of the people who protect your rights. Trust me buddy, theres' alot of stuff that goes on that you don't have a clue about. And belive me, you can believe aobut 30% of what you hear on CNN, but its your best source as all others, but just like you, they draw conclusions and report it.

The trick to the military is; And I quote General Patton: Why die for your country, the trick is to make that other dumb bastard die for his country.

TAKE the fight to them, why fight here, would you like to wait around for that? Please let me know.

I wish the mods would clean out this thread....

I have jsut as much right to voice my opinion as he did, I work for it. I did not insult him in any way, this is a good topic, and very nice. I don't understand why you would want it cleaned up?

The only reason I responded at all was the THINK comment, I was going to just read and move on, other than that, it's pretty fine. If you don't like my post, I will remove it, there's no need for the whole thread to be removed.

I don't think Boaz was referring to your post, your post was most excellent IMHO.

Yep - guys as I said in another thread I don't want this site to become the online version of Hannity & Colmes. Closing thread.
