A question about lights...HIDs and stuff....Now, WITH pictures!

Hello, I have a 2006 Sport ...I think its time to update the light output on this beast.

1. What are people doing to increase output from the stock fog lights? I'd like to go HID, but the stock fog lights aren't made for HIDs...since they use reflectors. What are my options when it comes to the fogs?

2. what can I do for the DRL and blinker lights? Can I go LED? Where can I find them if they exist?

3. At Xenon Depot. I was looking to get one of the Xtreme Digital HID kits. I noticed I could get an Xtreme Phillips Kit...is it better to go with the Phillips 43000K? Is 5000K too much in your opinion?

EDIT: After looking at some youtube videos that feature 5000K HIDs, they kind of look too blue. Its as if the 4300K offer the best, pure, cleanest white. The 4300K look VERY clean actually....

For a housing not designed for HID's, your best bet is HIR (halogen infrared).

Hey thanks for the link! Very interesting...I've never heard of such a bulb. The fogs on the 2006 are 9006 correct?

EDIT: Oh I see...they are 9011 bulbs, but with some slight trimming can be adapted to fit the 9006 configuration. Awesome.

I just put in my order for some Hi-beam and Fog HIR bulbs from that site. Thanks! $128 shipped. Not bad. Its been awhile since I've put anything "new" in to my beloved 4runner, she deserves it.

They should go nicely with my upcoming Xenon 4300K purchase.

how well do these bulbs work with the projector lights on my 08? Would they be better in terms of lighting up the road better than the xenon depot hid kits, or would the kits be better since i have projector style lights?

If you have projectors, HIDs are the way to go (from my research, not personal experience). When you put a HID in a housing designed for halogens, you have a lot of scattered light that isn't focused. So, you have more light, but not useable light. The HIRs on the other hand are designed for halogen housings. So, a HIR will have similar or possibly better output than a HID in a halogen housing. However, when you throw in projectors the HIDs are probably better. It comes down to the quality of the projector, which I'm not familar with.

1) To increase fog light intensity I went HID route but 04 fogs are projectors and have not bad cut-off

2) LEDs are the way to go. I have them everywhere except taillights. You can get dual color LED bulbs for DRL/blinker lights they work awesome, there is a write-up somewhere on this forum how to wire them properly, just search I'm sure you will find it.

3) Phillips bulbs is the only way to go in my opinion if you want HIDs. I tried several other bulbs from HID kits and they not as bright, have weird light patterns, inconsistent with output results and have half the lifespan. The only drawback, Phillips usually comes in 4300K only (85122 & 85122+). There is a Phillips Ultinon bulbs which are 6000K but they rare and very expensive. There is also a 85122 CM (color-match) bulbs which are 5000K. I personally prefer 5000K (pure white, no tint of blue when warmed up) for its color but 4300K (slightly yellowish) will give you the most usable light on a road. Don't rely on youtube video to judge the color, it looks different in person. It also depends how old bulbs are. When they age (300-500 hr and up) they tend to color-shift and gain some blueish tint also reducing output. 85122+ do not colorshift and stay at 4300K.

Just got an update on my order for the bulbs. Looks like they'll be here by this Friday....if not that then tomorrow! I'm pretty excited. Its been awhile since Ive done anything to my runner. I ordered the xtreme Phillips 4300k HID kit last night as well. They should go great with my HIR bulbs. I will keep you guys updated.

By the way....anyone know of a mod that makes it so your low beams and fogs stay on while your high beams are on? I don't want to damage the HIDs....by flashing my brights and having the HIDs turn off and on so suddenly. Does such a mod exist?

Wow, fast shipping! I don't have a link, but there is a mod that keeps the fogs on with the high beams, but I don't know of one to keep the lows on with the highs.

No luck with keeping low beams on while high beams are on though? I haven't found anything yet.


EDIT: oops I'm dumb. The low-beams already stay on with High Beams. Duh. I'll look in to that Fog light mod. Seems simple.

lows are always on when highs on. Not sure what you talking about. At leat on 04

HIR lights are in and installed! Fast shipping, came Friday...did the trimming per the website instructions. Had them all installed in about an hour. Results....awesome. Very clean....white light. Its just highs and fogs only. Or at least thats what I did. My Xtreme HID 4300K Phillips kit isn't in yet.

I have some pics from my cell phone...probably not the best but you can see a more yellow hint from the stock compared to this awesome HIR bulbs.

I'll try and get them posted up.

Glad they did the trick!! These were at the top of my list, but keep getting bumped down for one reason or another. I'll definitely have them soon though, I'm probably just putting them in the low beams though (what I use 90% of the time).

Here are some pictures.....not the best I know, I was using my awesome Droid phone heh.....

Anyways, just a quick description of the lights in person....the HIR bulbs are for sure a cleaner, white light. There is no yellow tint to them, that I can see at least. Very clean looking. I'd say that yes, it does kind of rival an HID setup. There is much more light being put out now. When I add my 4300K Phillips HID kit to the low-beams and later on my Vision X LED light bars to my roof, my runner will be like the Sun on wheels. Muahahahahaha.....

The bulbs. Stock bulb is on the right. HIR is on the left:

HIR installed in the left...you can see there is more light coming from the left hi-beam now.

Fog on the left is HIR and the fog on the right is stock. You can see the yellow tint of the stock bulb on the right compared to the HIR on the left. You can also see the amount of light coming out now compared to the stock bulb.

All in all I spent alittle under 130 bux to do my fogs and hi-beams. I am very happy with them and it was a very easy and awesome upgrade for my beloved 4runer.

Wow, pics came out pretty good if you ask me, definitley a difference. That makes me want to order mine now (been putting it off). Would you recommend the fogs? I am definitley doing the low beams and leaving the hi's alone (for now). I'm just unsure if the fogs actually add much usable light when paired with HIR lows.

Thats a good question.....honestly...I really just figured if I'm going to to do the hi-beams...I might as well just do the fogs too. Remember, my lows are going to HID, so I just did the fogs and highs only. The fogs at stock were already pretty good...I think....but the Fogs with HIR are for sure much brighter...the light output from the low HIRs (if you do them) will probably be very good. If you add both fogs and low-beams, I think you'll have awesome results.
