A Range Rover parked next to me (celebrity sighting)

& out jumps Charles Barkley. I had stopped at Circle K to get a quick cup of java. I had determined that the next time I had a chance, I was going to ask whoever was driving one of these $90 turbo-charged wonders if they ever took it off road. He said, "Nope. I've never done that. People keep tryin' to get me to do it, but that's not my thing." I said, "I've heard they're one heck off an off-roader." Charles said, "Yeah, when I bought it they took me on a test drive off-road & it was awesome." I said, "Well there you go!" He reiterated that it wasn't his thing, and quiped, "All I wanna do is play golf & gamble." I said, "Too bad, as there's lots of great places up north to go." He told me to have a wonderful day, and we drove off.

Afterwards I thought I should have asked him if he needed a life coach, or if anyone he knew needed a goals program (which is my business). People with that much time on their hands need to be doing something "productive." LOL!

Actually, I think he was scared of my 4Runner. He probably knew his might breakdown off-road, & that's just not a good thing for a celeb's ego! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I saw Sherman Douglas (a crappy point guard that used to play for the Bucks in the late 90's) in one way back when. I didn't ask him if he used it for off-roading though. At least it is better than an Escalade which was what every other NBA player drives.

Sherman Douglas was also a crappy point guard for the Celtics. Most of the celebs around Boston drive Benzes (Manny Ramirez), Hummer H1(Curt Schilling) and a Ferrari 360 (David Ortiz). No real off road rigs mostly luxury cars.

But I tell ya, this town was absolutely bananas when we moved here around 1992. I mean to tell ya that EVERYBODY was a Suns & Barkley fan then. It was extremely exciting basketball. Barkley was plastered all over billboards & city buses. Even little old ladies at work were talkin' basketball stats - no lie!

The police had statistics that showed traffic accidents & crime were way down when there was a game on, cuz everyone was watching the game on TV (arena was always sold out).

When they lost the title to the Bulls in game 7, OT, with a wild 3 pointer, they came back home to a parade of an estimated 300,000 people. Barkley was riding on top of the city bus that had his image painted down its whole length (including windows).

I think that qualifies as a celeb, eh?

Sir Charles had no aires about him at all. I just struck up a conversation like I would with anyone. Just another guy in Scottsdale, hopefully enjoying his wealth & life.

Probably most Range Rover owners stick to the pavement, but I don't see much evidence that 4Runner owners are any different. In my own experience (probably useless statistically) I have yet to run into a 4th gen out there. Older 4Runners and Tacomas are plentiful, of course.

I want a chance to prove that if someone gave me a Range Rover, I'd take it off road!

Yep, I was in Newport News VA the Monday before Thanksgiving.
Looked into a dark red Lexus LX 470 & Michael Vick was just ending a phone converstion. I ran down my passenger window & said "You better watch out - Lions can sneak up behind you!" [They were scheduled to play, and beat the Detroit Lions TG day]
He gave me that million $ smile & said "Ain't no lions sneaking up on my birds!" He was very pleasant & down to earth. We sat there for a few & chatted football. I didn't want to bug him, so said good luck & split.

what is it with bball players and Range Rovers. Jerry Stackhouse used to live next to me and he drove one as well... nice guy.
BTW, Sherman Douglas was awesome at Syracuse. Go Orange! (no football comments please)
