Not knocking you for spending the coin, it's your money. I had my 3RZ re-built when I could have grabbed a used one for a lot less but I knew the block from day one.

Did you get a price from the trans shop to rebuild yours? I think I saw someone on here get theirs rebuilt for $1800 + labor.

I just dont trust off the shelf remans. Probably cheap internals unless your local shop did it. Honestly I think I'd rather have a used Toyota trans.

A new A340f will be around $3200 plus labor around a grand . Are there any adds on craigslist parting out 3rd gens in your area that could be an option but either way it's a tuff spot to be in.

I would assume a typical 1 year warranty from Toyota. That doesn't matter, it should last 15. ;-)

Have you called Camelback toyota online parts or checked their website?
Brand new for a 97 Limited is $2,087.11 after core.

I would rather buy from a dealer than some local shop, usually at least.

Check parts.toyota.com click search icon (top right) and enter your part number. The Toyota website will list out competitive dealer prices for the dealer part. Here in San Diego the website shows me that the El Cajon dealership shows pretty good discount.

Never having done anything major like a trans replacement, I bought a used (from CL) with 252k miles (100K more than mine) for $200 and swapped it! It was a pain in my dick but I saved A LOT of money, gained experience, and some new scrapes on my arms and legs. I have a lift so I did it with all 4 tires on the ground.

I know not everyone has the time ( I didn't either which is why it took me a month) but hopefully its an option.
 
FYI all - I called Camelback and although the site doesn’t say it, the transmission is a remanufactured one.

He did say that he was sure it is not a local reman sold through the dealer, he was positive is comes from Toyota national parts. Personally I would far more trust getting an OEM Toyota rebuild vs aftermarket parts. I seriously doubt anyone local uses equal quality of internals.

Your local dealer is ripping you off. Here is San Diego lots of local dealers rip people off. Only 1 dealer showed up at near Camelback prices. That is why I suggested everyone check Parts.Toyota.com and look at actual competitive bids for the part cost.

Also you could just as easily buy the Toyota certified reman trans from Camelback for $2100 + $100 shipping and $0 tax. That is $2,200 and its on your doorstep.

$3,450 haha yeah if you like being ripped off then give that dealership your business. There are others who are not thieves, use them instead.

Thats because they probably have a few remans in stock they cant get rid of.
Screw them, there's plenty of Toyota dealers that sell online. I use Camelback but others have found the same or close to the same deals at other places.

We dont know any secrets, Google is your friend.

I think all of the $2K dealer trans are reman. That is what Camelback told me. They said the website doesn't show it but it is a reman. I assume a legit Toyota national parts reman trans is still pretty damn good quality since OEM parts & specs for the rebuild.

Probably, Camelback was the only one I've seen that didn't say reman & no core charge. Then there's definitely cheaper out there. A guy posted one for $1800 a few posts back.
