I didn't notice that you had posted the other thread I answered.
The trans fluid cooler is in the radiator. When the engine is overheating, the trans cooler can absorb some of the excessive heat. Possibly the cause of the AT Temp light.
You still want to check the fluid and maybe have it changed, since you don't know the service history.

I hate to be the guy to revive an old thread, but I figured adding to this one is better than starting another one. I'm having a similar issue with mine after 45 mins of driving. I checked the fluid and it looked a little dirty. I also noticed that the level was a bit higher than the top notch on the dipstick. I'm already planning of changing the fluid, but was wondering if the excessive level could be contributing to the transmission overheating issue.

I had the same thing. A/T oil light came on, I checked the level, added a little bit and the light came on a few minutes later. I found out that when the fluid is overfilled, it will also trip the light. I took it to my servicing dealer and they changed the fluid, correct level and no issues since.

ok, I'll definitely have to give that a try tomorrow when I get paid. Once I change the fluid and put it to the proper level, I'll post up the results. Thanks for the input

Since I had my fluid changed the light has stayed off. I've also been avoiding long hills & I try to stay under 65 mph. Towed a small boat a few times this Summer with no problems although I stayed off the highway for that. Seems like clean fluid & not beating on the truck helps. I've not had any issues with the light coming on due to over filling so can't comment on that. Good luck figuring it out.

A/T oil temp light and slipping trans
I just bought a 1991 T4R (160,000 miles) last night and the auto tranny would not engage at first (seemed to slip and not want to pull the truck at all). This was my 3rd time driving it, but the first time it did this and of course on the way home for the first time. Then, it finally engaged and seemed to work normally for about 20 miles @ highway speeds. Then, the A/T oil temp light comes on. So I pull over at a gas station and let it cool down. The trans was HOT, but the little radiator next to it was COLD. So, I checked the coolent level and it was low. Added a gallon of premixed coolant. Checked the trans fluid level. Seemed low. Added Dextron II, now seems full. Started the truck and let it warm back up for a while. Drove it around the block a few times and the trans was working fine. Pulled back into the gas station to wash my hands and when I came back out, the trans would not engage at all again. It seems to want to move the truck, but very little, like a clutch is slipping or something. This is my first post and I'm very nervous about completing the sale now. What do you think everyone?
