Hello all-

This is my first post here but this forum has helped me get my car in the for the sulfur smell however I still need a little help. I'm looking for the TSB on V8 4runners (03-04) so that I can confirm that my VIN is good to go and that my type of engine is good to go. oh and if there are any other TSB's laying about that might be nice too

Alldata seems to be keeping about 6 months worth of full TSB's at the address above.
Searching the forum will often help for older ones, as they've probably been discussed before.
If you're really interested, you can pay to access Toyota's Tech Info web site. That's got over a decade's worth of information including TSB's, Owners Manuals, Service Manuals, and other stuff. Prices start at $10 for one day, http://techinfo.toyota.com.
As for the sulfur TSB, don't worry - you're covered. The first TSB covers 03-05 4Runners, and they issued another one for 06.

Took my 05 V8 in to the dealer today for the sniff test. Service writer was friendly and helpful and eventually we prevailed over the service manager who said try a different brand of gas. I've had the 4R for 15 months and have tried them all - anyway Atlanta and the 40 counties around only get atlanta-gasoline, a low sulfur blend from a couple of Baton Rouge refineries -- since 2002. Lately the smell has been ammonia more often than rotten eggs or maybe my nose is out of whack.

My advice is be polite but persistent and print out the TSB and take it with you.
Be helpful when they ask where you got it - they told me that some customers tell them "none of your business". These guys deal with difficult people all day and are good at it. Throw 'em a curve and stay friendly.

I've had the same thing happen with my 2006 4Runner since I bought it in March. I've smelled ammonia pretty often and thought there was a leak from the windshield washer fluid or something in the engine compartment. I thought I must be imagining it until I saw the above post.

A couple of days ago I had to accelerate harder than usual and I finally smelled the sulfur smell I've read about on the forum. Been able opt reproduce it at will afterwards. I called the dealer (Marietta Toyota) and they gave me some kind of BS about trying a different kind of gas. I pressed them and then mentioned the TSB and the y gave in... I'll schedule a service next week for them to examine the truck.

For the folks that have had their cats replaced, is the Ammonia smell normal?

I've had the same thing happen with my 2006 4Runner since I bought it in March. I've smelled ammonia pretty often and through there was a leak from the windshield washer fluid or something in the engine compartment. I thought I must be imagining it until I saw the above post.

For the first 800 miles or so, I noticed a funky smell coming from the engine compartment. I don't know that I'd call it an ammonia smell, but it didn't smell like exhaust either. It was most noticable inside the truck when coming to a complete stop at a light after going about 45+ mph. I thought it was exhaust, too, after reading all of the sulfur smell posts. But then I noticed the smell around the grille one day. I found out in a TSB for another Toyota model that it might be an anti-rust coating that was sprayed on some engine components for the boat trip from Japan to the U.S., and that it will burn off. Sure enough, it has gone away on its own. If customers complain, the TSB said to wipe off several different components (after they cool off!) with a solvent to remove the coating.

Thanks for the reply. I saw the TSB you mentioned, but I don't think that's it. My 4Runner had 5400 miles on it when I bought it and I'm pretty sure the coating that is mentioned has been worn/burned off by now. I only smell the Ammonia odor when the back window is open.
