A340F Variants - Some Questions

Hilux Surf SSR-G needs a new tranny due to the not very tasty pink milk shake.
From the VIN It was built in April 1999 and trans is a A340F A03A. Is the latter a reference to the multi-mode transfer case or specific to the transmission?
Does a regular A340F bolt/wire-up with no issues? or do I need one from the exact same year with the same t.case?
Are the Californian ones different?
Does anyone know of one for sale or have any pointers? It will be heading to FL.

A03A is the differential gear ratio code. In your case 4.10 gear ratio differentials. What engine do you have?

That's where things might get a little interesting. I'm 99 percent sure that the 1KZ and 5VZ have the same transmission bellhousing. I know that the 3RZ has a different bellhousing pattern. So with that being said any A340F from a 96-00 5VZ 4Runner will work for you. Transfer case does not matter as the normal j-shift (VF2A) and the multimode (VF3AM) are the same pattern regardless of transmission.

What I'm not sure about is the torque converter being the same, and if the throttle cable provisions between the transmission and throttle body are needed or used on your diesel engine/transmission.

Thanks for the response. With regard to the throttle cable, does being RHD make any difference? There is an intercooler up top and t.body isn't visible to my untrained eye. The dip stick is in the same location as the V6
I'll see if any I can find any pics or will crawl underneath over the w/e.

I don’t think so, but I’ve never had the opportunity to examine a diesel 3rd gen.

It might be easier to look at the transmission and see if there is a cable going into it. I’ll try to find a pic of what you’re looking for.

the KZN185 changed to fly-by-wire sometime in 1999 or maybe late 1998 for 1999 MY so there won't be a cable to the transmission. also the torque converter is bigger and that is why the transmission support is located farther back compared to the VZN185. also, the housing is different because of the location of the transfer case shifter

That’s really good info to know for future reference. Thanks for teaching me something new today.

That really narrows down transmission options. So OP needs to find a 99 and newer A340F transmission originally from a 1KZ 3rd gen?
 
yes, the OP needs to get a tranny from a 1999-2000 KZN185. For Japan, the KZN185 was only up to 2000 MY. 2001-2002 MY, the diesel engine was changed to 1KD-FTV (KDN185).

I had done some research before seeing the new posts.
Apparently I need transmission part number is 35000-3D780 (07/1998 - 07/1999) and I found pics of the same one online.
Haven't compared the connection differences between the two as yet but the bell housing has a different shaped bump out (for starter motor?)
Below is a link and a link to a 1999 V6 one.
To locate a specific Surf is not god news as they are not as common.

A diesel won't have a (traditional) throttle body. If there is a throttle cable to the trans, it will on whatever controls fueling (mechanical or electric fuel delivery system). It may have something that would work as a throttle plate on a gas motor, but it will only be used as a safety shutoff for the engine.
