A_S_R's Build Thread

Ark, you beat me too it! Great choice on the tires, that's the exact tire I'm getting. My Toytec Superflex coils arrived last week but I've been traveling like crazy (for work) and haven't had time to install them. I love the stance of your runner and the GY Duratracs look awesome. What load range did you go with?

Perfect.

I have done the FJ springs install. How much more difficult would you say this set up would be to install? I know it is a loaded question so don't think too much into it.

I am gonna wait until the XREAS is shot (just a matter of time because I know the leaks is inevitable) My plan is to collect the pieces so I have everything when the time comes.

Thanks so much for the help!!!

If you've done the FJ install, you can handle installing this. It's the same thing for shocks/coils. The only other thing is the UCA's, that install was super easy, much easier than the shock/coil install. It took me under two hours with the help of a fellow member (neither of us had done this before). Install shouldn't be a problem.

snip...
MPG is going to be the big factor. I'm hoping to stay at 15 or better, but we'll see. According to the lie-o-meter and a little city driving, it looks promising. It'll be another week at least before my first full tank with the new tires. I'll post up once I get a chance to do some actual calculations.

ASR, great looking ride! I love the lift and the tire combo. Quick question, did you adjust the speedo/odo for the increase in tire size? if so, what's the best way?

I haven't done anything yet, but I'm planning on correcting it with the speedohealer. I actually checked today, odometer is 9.1% slow. Speedometer is off, but not that much, more like 6-7%.

Quick report on gas mileage after the additional lift and Duratracs. I've filled up a total of 7 times this year. Combined average for those fill ups is 15.72 mpg. Just filled up last night and got 15.53.

Driving is about half city, half highway. Those are hand calculated numbers, but they are not corrected for the larger tire size. Using the mileage from my Garmin GPS, the before average is 16.74. The after average is 16.94.

So, initial impression is very optimistic. I don't have actual data, but I don't recall any mpg loss switching from stock to the 255/75/17s. So far, little or no difference switching to the 285s which doesn't make sense at all (not going to complain though).

I did take readings of the tach at various speeds. I notice no difference in RPMs between the 255s and 285s.

Looking good, great setup...Suspension wise, how does it handle on road compared to xreas?? I thought I read somewhere that the 5100's couldn't be installed on the rear with air suspension. Glad to see you can because I think thats the way I'm going to go.

Thanks. It handles better and feels more planted than stock. However, it's quite a bit stiffer over bumps. I'm probably going to swap the front omes for something softer in the near future to help with this.

It is not advised to run longer than stock shocks on the rear. However, I feel that since the stock position of the air bags has been raised, the longer shocks are fine. Also, I mostly deal with mud, I don't fully flex the suspension often, which lessens the risk also. In the end, I've got over 160K miles on the stock ras. I'm ready to swap to coils, just gonna wait till it fails first. That said, increased wear or risk of messing up the air bags isn't a huge concern for me. Also wanting to ditch the rear air bags because the rear has always been very stiff imo.

Ok, now I'm wondering if the 886 will be too stiff. I'm not sure if I want to add weight in the future but it would be nice to be on the safe side. Also I wouldn't mind removing the RAS it would just be a pain finding a new dash cluster etc. Does the RAS limit flex compared to stock springs?

At stock weight I would go 885s at most.I don't know of anyone replacing the cluster, I'm most likely not going to when I do the swap. I'm going to try toconvert to an aftermarket air bag setup. Not sure if its possible, but I'm going to give it a shot. My guess would be that the bags do limit travel, but that's only a guess.

I guess I'll just have to pull the trigger on springs and hope for the best. As for the cluster, the OCD inside me would want to get rid of the RAS indicator on the dash. It would be cool to see it set up with aftermarket air bags tho.

Yea, I agree there. I've done quite a bit of research, I don't any reason I can't convert the OEM system to aftermarket bags. I may find out otherwise when I tear it apart, but after looking at some detailed pics I think I can make it work.

If you're interested in swapping out, this is the best documentation I've found on the process.

I have a couple buddies that have the Duratrac's on their work trucks and they swear they are great on road. The stiffness of the ply allows it roll as freely as a cheaper smaller tire. It seem the Duratrac's are just a superior tire. I honestly don't see a current tire that can compare. I cant wait to get a set of my own. Congrats!

Yep, they have been excellent on road thus far! They are a bit rougher than the P rated Hankook's they replaced, but that's to be expected. As far as performance, they blow the Hankook's away. Far superior performance. Still haven't had a chance to test them off road, no doubt they'll do excellent though.

For an updated gas mileage report, things are still looking great. Over the last six fill ups that were split 50/50 city/highway, I'm averaging 17 mpg. On a trip that was 90% highway, I got a 18.75 mpg. Unbelievable numbers. I'm using my Garmin GPS to calculate mileage since my speedometer/odometer is off. These numbers are on par with what I was getting with the 255/75's.

On a side note, also extended the diff breather over the weekend. Very easy/simple mod that I should have done a long time ago.

So I am way up north at my storage locker and was goin through some stuff an came across somethin that made me think of you! Here's a pic of it and I hope it helps you out in some way....

Here's the upper side that sits in the recess of the chassis with the air connection still in place.

And here's the bottom that has the half inch pin that sits in the lower mount.

I know the pics are terrible but all I brought up here is my phone and the light is terrible.

As for the hight control display within the dash, I left it as it is and simply disconnected the buttons in the center console and zap-strapped the hieght sensors up on themselves. Thought to put compressor and locker switches in place of the height control switches but the dog steps there sometimes so I put them just above the incabin fuse box. The hight control does blink "off" at me but I never notice it and have plans to just remove some bulbs one day maybe or wire locker indications there and custom make something cool like that.

I looked into the aftermarket airbags a bunch and was full of uncertanties which is why I did what I did and stayed away from them, also there not really meant for offroad so much like I do. However I do wish you the best of luck with your conversion :)

Thanks Huskey, I appreciate those pics.
