AAA Review slams 5th Gen - who has driven both?

I'll complain about it. Non-functional scoops are pointless.

Actually, mine has been very functional & effective - at catching bugs!:frog:

Overall, the fifth-generation 4Runner, while significantly improved over the previous offering, still felt dated and out of touch with the modern SUV market. The vehicle seemed to me a throwback to vehicles built a decade ago. 4Runner feels huge and most definitely truckish.

Really? I have no idea how this could be true since the thing is completely sealed - unless somebody opened it up to senselessly let all the junk blow on top of their engine!:nono:

That would still be hard because of the aerodynamics of trucks, there isn't much air in that low area. Its all pushed higher up. Hence the need for a HUGE scoop to be effective. If I had to guess I'd say scooped hoods engine compartments tend to be dirtier because they are found on trails and the majority of people that wheel often probably bought trails.

The only thing I would like to change on my 4runner is the shiny silver plastics on the interior, not because they are shiny or because they are plastic, they just seem to scratch very easily. I already have scratches on the interior door plastic just from having my keys in my hand when closing the door. I wish I could replace that shiny silver plastic with brushed aluminum. Are there any kits for this that are not that crappy stick-on garbage?

I used to have a large district AAA office as a customer, and if the guy who reviewed the 4R is as limp-wristed as all the men who worked there, his opinion on SUVs/trucks would be useless.

I don't think there is anyone here, tiny margin at best, that even gave the Highlander a second thought vs. a 4Runner.

I "saw" one on my way to test drive my 4RLtd. I like my 4runner to be a TRUCK. I, too, am honestly annoyed with some of these reviewers. In my opinion, Toyota hit it right on the mark with the 5th gen. I've now got 8k miles on my 2010 and I'm LOVING every day with it. So what if the interior isn't as posh as some of the other cars, this is a sport UTILITY vehicle. This is not an Escalade.. If I wanted a posh interior with all the 4runner capabilities, I'd have bought a Land Crusier. I'll never vear from Toyota, been buying these vehicles since 1993. Today, tomorrow, next week, Toyota, always. I say we take these reviewers out on a trail somewhere, stick them in thier "favorite" (thier pick, GMC, whatever) and then see who makes it back. My moneys on a 4runner towing thier pos back to the camp.

Agreed! Anyone hearing that they might conceivably drop a V8 in the 5th gen? I need it for towing, and don't want to jump up to something larger (won't fit in the garage!). My 4th gen only has 110k, but . . .

How much are you towing? My tacoma (that has the older less powerful v6) pulls stuff like this just fine.

Clearly we all need to sell our 4Runners and get one of these awesome riding CUVs. It looks like it will be great offroad with that brush guard.

Now, you'll have to remove the lower air dam to get the brush guard on. :lol:

Say it with me: GLORIFIED MINIVAN. Hell, it is actually a *bad* minivan when compared to a Sienna or Odyssey.

In my opinion that review is pretty much a matter of personal opinion. I drove different SUVs and to me 4Runner is the best of them at the moment in the same price range. I would say that closest to 4Runner was 2010 Ford Explorer, but in the matter of fact after I took 4Runner for a test drive, I couldn't think about any other SUV I wanted to buy. Another thing is reliability record and vehicle price after 5 years, most of the reviews don't mention it at all.

How are you able to tow that much with your non functional hood scoop? :shrug:
