hey guys,

I am about to buy a 2005 ltd v8 4runner, and I would like to know if there is any known problems with that years make/model ex:weird noises etc...

Also after inspecting the vehicle real fast yesterday in the dark....I noticed on both doors neer the front windows the leather was messed up, like as if a dog or something scratched them.....is there any way to repair that? is that even real leather?

I will be going back on sunday to have a look at it in the day light :P

Take it to an upholstery shop, they'll prolly sewed it back it or re-attach it back up.

No major issues...
1) In addition to assessing the maint status determine what the timing belt status is. The V8 needs a timing belt every 90k.
2) Try 4lo (you can drive it on dry pavement). Put it in N, select 4lo. There should be steady lights and no beeping after it transitions.
3) Momentarily engage the diff lock while driving straight. Make sure it completes it's cycle (steady dash lights). You don't need to drive it any distance like that nor do you want to while on pavement. You'll be confirming proper operation and the ability of the t-case to cycle through the modes.

Good luck!:D

thats funny cause I asked the used car salesman that exact question regarding timing belt, and he told me it had a timing CHAIN, and those usually take a very long time before they need replacing.....by the way the car has 95k KM's

Well, the V6 has a timing chain, the salesman could of been confused, but most likely, he was lying.

One thing about the V8, it is an interference engine, meaning it SHOULD be replaced every 90,000 miles. So, it needs to be changed and my guess is, it was not changed. Probably around a $600 to $900 job. You usually change the water pump and anti-freeze. So, I would ask if it had been changed, if not subtract $1,000 off your offer.

The V8 is a great engine and I think it was up-dated in 2005 and came with variable timing (Vtt-i).

I went to see a v6 ltd this weekend ans tried 4lo....as soon as I changed it to 4lo it would beep non stop, the owner told me that when its in 4low it will always beep until you take it off.....

the locking of the differential, didn't go smoothly as anticipated either....
I would push the button it would flash and stay firm after a little while, when disengaged the light stayed on, took some time before it went away.

Regarding the locking of differential, when would you use this on 4hi?

In regard to the continuous beeping while in 4lo the owner is incorrect. If locked in place the truck shouldn't beep and the appropriate lights should be lit on the dash. It should be noted that the vehicle must be in Park or Neutral to engage 4lo on the v6, not sure about the v8. As far as lights staying on, my 4wd does the same if I haven't engaged the system in a while. The lights only stay on for maybe 10 to 15 secs tops, my experience has been that the system is just lethargic from not being used. Someone else will have to answer your question about the center diff lock, Ive never found it to be useful. Good luck.

The v8 is the same. You have to be stopped in Neutral for it to actually go in 4Lo.

Center Diff Lock is when you want to lock the truck in 4wd. Don't use this on dry pavement, only slippery surfaces.
