I wouldn't know about the price, but a lot of people were pissed in a thread awhile back about their v8, doing this huge surge or lunge when engaging and disengaging the ac clutch (right term?). I'd take it on the freeway and mess around with the AC and see if this if it does it/something thats ok with you or not.

Dude, you gotta do a better job negotiating than that...that should be an insult to you. It's almost september and like a poster said above, it's not even 3K off. Go look at edmunds..etc. to see what people are paying for your area.

I've come to love my SR5 V8 that I bought in March this year, but the AC issue that many of us experience would have been a deal breaker if I had had the wherewithal to have tested the AC before I signed on the dotted line. I tell you what though, it'll never happen again!

It only seems like many because very few people come to forums to rave about a car. The V8 is the better motor - get it and dont worry about the surging as it doenst happen to mine and I am sure it wont happen to yours.

As far as the V8 reliability and performance go, I think it is top notch. There are some known issues with the driveline needing to be lubed regularly in order to keep the driveline clunk/surge at bay and it is not a big issue. It also happens on 4R's with the V6 so it has nothing to do with the V8. I have been very pleased with my V8 equipped 4R.
Regarding price, I think it sounds more fair than others have indicated. It also depends on the option packages that comes with that particular 4R. I have a similarly equipped '07 SE 4WD V8 and MSRP was a little over $37k when you add in all the BS they charge you for like Homelink, floor mats, dealer handling, etc. Not to mention the options I did want and the price of that option package (Homelink, auto dimming rearview mirror, 6 disc in-dash CD player, etc.). I ended up paying $32,480 which included $1,500 cash back. That equaled about $5k off of sticker which I felt was a pretty fair price back in '07.
Despite the recession, people are not giving anything away. That includes cars. My buddy just bought a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and even with all the problems Chrysler is having, they are not giving cars away. Did my buddy get a good deal? Yes. Did Jeep pay him to take the car? No. Despite slow sales and a sluggish economy, giving cars away with small margins doesn't make business sense either. I'm not defending the dealer here and I'm sure there is more wiggle room in the price, but that dealer wouldn't be in business long if they were selling cars with little to no margin in it for themselves. Gas prices have stayed more than reasonable this year so I wouldn't sweat buying my V8 again nor do I think the dealer will give it away just because it has a V8.

The surging of my V8 4WD only occurs sporadically when the AC is on but it is not terrible. I wouldn't let it prevent me from buying a V8 4WD. As for the deal, it is definitely not good: 140 miles on a new vehicle is not new to me, redesign is coming in a few months, the truck is almost a model year old.
i have to agree with Mark86. the new model is just around the corner...and that's pretty big deal to most people. i'd go in and cry, complain, whatever about that. but honestly, you have to decide how much your time is worth. if you go back and haggle with them for another 3-4 days just to save $500...is it worth it? maybe try to negotiate some service based add-ins. Free oil changes for 4 years...i don't know. something that they can roll in to dealer costs that will save you money. just a thought.
also, re the V8...i was just going to make another post about how much i love mine. i wanted the V6 when i was shopping for my 4th Gen...but my V8 Limited was too good of deal to pass up. now i can't imagine NOT having it. sure i'm at the gas station a bit more often, but having those ponies under the hood is pretty damn awesome.

Just want to add: When I was shopping for 4Runner, I went back and forth about getting V6 or V8… or even waiting for a new generation…
I am so glad I got V8, especially knowing (based on current info) that new 2010 4Runner will not offer V8…

Please post evidence that the V8 "is the better motor." I and many others are very happy with our V6's; plenty of power, better fuel economy, and not saddled with full time 4wd.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say that the V8 is the better engine as they're both excellent, but like you, I'm happy with what I have. I certainly don't feel "saddled" with full-time 4WD; instead, I appreciate not having to remember to flip it on before the road conditions suddenly deteriorate. I also like the smooth acceleration that comes out of the bigger motor, but as you point out, there's a trade-off in fuel economy for that.
I think the surging is a matter of perspective. There is no question that when the A/C shuts off there is a sudden burst of available power from the engine. If I'm moving, I don't notice it at all - it doesn't affect my speed or anything else. If I'm not moving (stopped at a light), I did have to learn to hold the brake pedal more firmly than I was used to. Without enough brake force, that surge could actually move the truck a bit! Now that I have learned to do that, I don't notice the surge when stopped, either. I guess my point is that if I had always applied the brake strongly while at a light, I never would have noticed an issue.

i have to agree with toto, i cant say the v8 is the better engine, yes, both are great, i have the v6 in my 08 highlander, but i will say, ive owned 4x4s since 73, most had 4 or 6 cyl., one had a v8. all had selectable transfer cases, except one also had the fulltime option.(grand cherokee). so i went shopping for a v6,selectable transfer case, t4r,... drove both engines, & was just greatly impressed with the v8, it seemed smoother & quieter. not only was i surprised, but i was also greatly impressed with toyotas version of fulltime 4wd. to me, it seems better than alot of other auto makers versions. so, even tho i wasnt looking for the v8 with FT4WD, i ended up buying one, & can honestly say i dont feel " saddled" with anything. its also nice to have a v8 again before we all have to start driving a prius , not that theres anything wrong with that. im not trying to offend anybody, just telling my story to the person whos looking for a T4R, good luck, youll enjoy either version of this great vec.
