About to pull the trigger on 2008 SR5 T4R....

Struck a deal with a Toyota dealer a couple hours from my home on a gently used 2008 SR5.
Mileage: 22k
One owner
Roof rack
4WD
Color the wife likes
How does $23,000 sound?

Going to put a refundable deposit down in the morning since I can't get out there till Wednesday.

Any thoughts......(other than order the lift kit!)

Not a lot of details there, so it's not easy to tell if the price is reasonable or not. I'd figure out what a similar new one would cost and compare. New ones are starting at invoice price and then subtracting any applicable rebates. You could also use Edmunds or KBB to appraise it.

I bought mine about a year ago, it had about 28k miles on it. 2007 SR5 4wd, so it was about the same age and mileage in comparison.

I wound up paying about $21k plus taxes, at that time gas was still high, so SUV sales were slower then too......but, the economy wasn't in as bad of shape either. I'd keep working on the dealer some more.....make them want to sell it worse than you want to buy it.

I would expect to pay less than NADA values right now considering current economic status.

JMO, though, I don't even know what the value of that vehicle is...I'm about to do some car shopping too this coming week or two, and I'm going in playing hardball (or no ball ! ). But I don't "need" a car right now.....so I've got the leverage. They need to sell cars though. FWIW

I've been looking for a 4Runner for several weeks now (while trying to sell my Jeep) and this deal seems to be pretty good for a 2008 model. I realize things are pretty slow for the dealers right now so I hope to be able to make up a little on my trade....
since I haven't been able to sell my Jeep Wrangler, I think I'm goint to trade it in. If they try to screw my on the trade, i'm walking.
I've already let the dealer know my wife is deploying in 2 weeks and we don't have time to **** around making a deal on the car. Hopefully he takes me seriously and I will be the proud owner of a new white T4R on Wednesday.

The really nice thing about the 2008 is that they made side and side curtain air bags standard. Before it was an option. You can buy a new 08 2WD base for a little less than that. Being a 4WD, it may be worth it. It also depends on what options you have. Good luck in trying to get it.

The loader 08's SR5 4x4 V6's were going for $25-26k here when they were trying to move the 08's out.

I think you should be able to pick up a brand new V6 4WD SR5 for 26K. On a new car the APR most of the time better than used car APR. (especially when there's a APR or cash back promo). That can also save you some $$$. That truck will be out of warranty in about a year or so with the mileage. I was in a similar situation about two years ago, got a 2004 for $21.000 which sounded a great deal, it had only 13K on it, but the warranty was running out since it was 30 months old. Soon after she had problems, the service had no idea what was it, went back and forth to service. The tires were gone, was looking for new tires. I'm not even sure it was really 13K on it.. So I got very angry for my stupidity, I traded in and got a brand new, which was about $4000 more. I have over 23K on it now, has no problem at all. I sleep better knowing it's history, when the oil was changed, tires rotated, no accidents, etc.. When you finance in that price range, every $1000 more adds about $20 to the monthly payment. So it's going to be about $3 more/day to finance a new one instead of that deal...

For reference, I picked up my brand new leftover 2008 SR5 4wd V8 (sticker price was a hair under $34K) for $25,750. I made the deal 1/31/09 in Massachusetts.

Sounds to me like an OK, not great, deal. You are almost 2/3 of the way through the warranty with 22K miles.

Ask them to price out a new leftover 2008 4Runner and compare the savings.

Update: After checking a Carfax on the rig in question I discovered it was a rental car in it's previous life. Needless to say I'm not too fired-up about owning a 4WD 4Runner from Utah that was a rental car. I guess the search will continue......

I bought an 08 SR5 4X4 with 25K miles for $21K about a month ago. They wouldn't budge anymore on the price of the runner but I got them to move on the price of the trade-in (not easy to sell a 2wd ford explorer in Colorado) and got them to drop the dealer handler fees after threatening to leave and walking out the door a few times.

I picked up my '08 SR5, 4WD, V6 for $18,850 back in Nov. 08. It had 26k on it. Had some kind of option package (sunroof, roof rack, etc) The dealers in this area were asking 23-26k during that time frame. So I went thru a broker. Was very clean, but I spent some on WeatherTech flor liners, AmsOil and a Curt trailer hitch.

I would NEVER trade in my car at the dealer. I have tried a few times but I always feel like they are getting one over on me.

To properly gauge a good selling price for your Heep and a good buying price for the T4R I highly recommend autotrader.com. It will show the prices in your area for the options you want.
