about to try to help my paint out

I've decided I'm going to see what I can do for my imperial mica jade paint.

Today I bought a Meguiar's clay bar kit, ultimate compound and black wax. I did a quick search and looks like I need to go in this order:

wash
clay
compound
polish (need to go get some)
wax

Is this order correct? Any other suggestions for a first timer?

I don't have a polisher but may end up wishing I did. I have no aspiration of the paint looking new since the clear is beat up pretty good in places. I just want it to look as good as possible with out painting the whole vehicle.

I'd skip the compound if you have no electric buffer, or maybe even if you do. More likely to make it look worse where it's good, and remove what little is left where it's bad. Post some pics and I'll give you my 2 cents. Of course 30+ years in the auto body industry makes my 2 cents worth just a little more.
 
You can get a polisher at Harbor Freight along with pads. No need for the expensive stuff if you are not a pro detailer. Also, if your 4Runner is a 1997 then it is not Imperial Jade, it is Evergreen Pearl. From factory at least.

Oops. You're probably right. I'm not up on all right names for the paint color
 
The clear coat on the hood is cooked, there's not much you can do for it. I would look into repainting the hood since the fenders and other parts around it look like they would clean up with a compound and polish.

He's right, effectively there IS NO clear on most of your hood. But that doesn't mean you can just clear coat it. Well you can but it would look horrible. Paint it! Or, if you like the Rolling Stones, Paint it Black!
 
Ha thanks guys. I know it's shot in that spot. But there's a lot if rather put money into on this thing than new paint.

I'd just like to protect what's there. I'm considering painting it with linex or something similar down the road. I know that's probably blasphemy but for a rig that's going to become primarily a hunting rig it would work out
 
Look around. I recall a recent thread where a guy said that he found a person on craigslist that painted his fender flares for a very fair price.

If you're going to use it primarily as a hunting rig, you might go the DIY route with Monstaliner for the hood and roof, and then use the other products you mentioned for the rest. You can request up to 5 free color samples: Monstaliner do-it-yourself roll-on truck bed liner

Mouse over "Request Info" at the top for the form to fill out.
 
Well I had some free time so I washed the good off rubbed it with the bar and waxed it. It didn't fix it obviously but I think it did help it a little. Now I just need to do the rest of it.

It does look better. Sadly it will revert to what it was in a few days. Depending on the wax, it may actually look worse. Sorry.

Which Harbor Freight polisher and pads would you recommend?
 
You can always vinyle wrap your rig... I have been thinking about it. Change the color if you want, gloss or flat, so many options. Plus it's cheap, like a couple hundred bucks cheap if you DIY. There are tons of how to videos on YT you can watch. Plus, it comes right off if you want your paint back with no ill effect (well it might peel off some of that already peeling clear coat, but thats it). I'm gunna mess with mine when I run out of performance stuff to do...
