ABS issue, bump or once engaged

I remember reading on this years back & did not see any recall info when searching earlier.

Essentially it was 1st stated that when hitting a bump while braking the ABS would engage & not allow the vehicle to stop for some distance (approx. semi/tractor trailer length for me).

Again, today, I was going <6mph down a slight hill & played with the brakes, locking them up, then let off, but once I reapplied the brakes the ABS just instantly kicked in no matter brake pedal pressure applied (i.e. soft). Thus I slid into a small intersection & had to through it in reverse once I was stopped. I also placed the tranny in "N" as that seems to help the stopping (see drive shaft binding issue that is common).

Was there ever a "fix" for this??
Next time I'm in for service I'll see what the head mechanic @ the dealership says.

If there is not a fix, is there a simple way to slice a wire to disable the ABS and/or Traction Ctrl? Seems the 4th gen's are trickier to do than 3rd gen's

That's a tad odd... my '04 has the ABS kick in sometimes if I hit the brakes over a good sized speed bump, but I have never had it increase braking by 30+ feet as a result.

I don't about the ABS issue, my fix would be to not hit the brakes over bumps lol. As for getting rid of it, Just unplug one or all of your ABS sensors and the system wont work, altho your dash will be light up like an xmas tree and you'll also lose VSC, DAC, Hill start assist and you diffs will be no longer "limited slip" meaning you could get stuck on wet grass.

well the tradeoff of disconnecting it seems a bit much without a switch.

Today it occurred by me simply locking up the brakes to test road conditions then letting off & gently applying brakes again but I may as well been on black ice because I slid into an intersection...all while the FWD sedan behind me had no issue. Glad the intersection was small (Golden, CO) so it was a non-issue.

*note: I was in 4WD

Very annoying. Ordered some Hankook ATM's so maybe more meat will help...

I guess I'll expedite the call to my dealer contact & see what guess he may have. It's not a new issue for me though.
A Mercedes sedan I had never remotely had that sort of issue & it was RWD, so more sliding

I would contact my dealer, seems like a rather serious issue. Until then drive slower, all the ABS in the world won't stop you if your going too fast.

Just on the note of the comparing the 4r to the FWD sedan. 4wd doesn't help you stop faster and that sedan probably stopped earlier because it weights less (so less momentum) and who knows he could have better snow tires then you.

EDIT: Could be wrong on this but a quick google search leads me to believe the Hankook ATMs aren't winter tires. Using a all-season in winter is bad. Think of an all-season tire as a hockey puck sliding on a skating rink compared to a winter tire which is like a sponge sliding on a skating rink...which one do you think slides easier?? Even with perfect ABS winter tires are far more effective at preventing you from sliding then all seasons

It's not your tires, you have a serious ABS malfunction. I wouldn't drive it until you get it fixed. I wish I could say what the problem is but I can't, I just don't want to be in the intersection next time you slide through it.

Sorry for the confusion the last sentence in my post is a bit misleading, ill edit it. I agree 100%, clearly the ABS is fooked...I'm not saying the tires are causing the issue but I am saying that malfunctioning ABS and bad tires is worse than manfuctioning ABS and good winter tires.

I have a contact (head mechanic) at the dealership I purchased it through. Hopefully he can help with troubleshooting & then price (even though this issue existing within warranty you know dealerships...).

Since this sounds like an isolated incident I don't have much faith in them finding the problem quick nor cheap.

Oh, & only time I've used winter tires is when I had a RWD sedan. All seasons seem to do well, been on ice plenty here, especially on I70 in the mountains
