My apologies ahead of time if this has already been discussed here. I've tried searching and couldn't find anything. I'm new here, fyi.
I bought a 2003 4runner Limited (V8 full time 4wd) about a week ago. I took a chance buying it with extremely high mileage (242k) and the VSC light on. However, it was in mint condition, and an really low price.
That said, I fixed the VSC light with a quick zero point calibration.
Took the kids offroading for the first time Saturday.....nothing major. Did smack a rock real hard and bent the front skid plate near the rear bolts, but didn't break anything. Some mud, but didn't get it submerged any higher than the axles.
Got off the mtn, and drove around looking for dinner....basically another hour or so on the road til home.
Got up for church this morning, cranked it to warm up. Came out about 10min later, got inside, and just as I sat down, the ABS, VSC lights, and BRAKE! light all came on, coupled with a constant beep.
I tried to pull codes real quick with my bluetooth OBD2 scanner, but it apparently was a Toyota specific code.
So, we took the car to church, came back home a couple hours later, turn the key to acc mode, the lights and beep came on for about a second, and then disappeared when I cranked the motor. I've tinkered with all master cyclinder/ABS connectors to check for any corrosion. I also took a peek underneath and the wheel sensors look ok visually.
Drove it around. Still nothing. It's as if it never happened.
My local Toyota mechanic (works for the dealer, but helps a few of us out on the side) seems to be almost 95% its going to be a bad actuator.
I'm FREAKING OUT because doesn't that pretty much mean $700(used)- $2000 in parts? All I've seen is that everyone ends up replacing that entire master cyclinder/brake booster assembly.
Any ideas why it kicked on and then magically went away?
