ABS light after replacing rear axle seals

I replaced my rear axle seals (driver's side only) and my first test drive is showing my ABS light on.

I will admit this...when I was changing the inner seal, I removed the speed sensor (as suggested in the BigFishAllDay writeup), and had a bit of trouble after that...when I was replacing it after the seal was done, it wouldn't seat back down all the way. So, I got it close, and didn't really want to bang on it, and figured once I started tightening the bolt, it was become flush. I then proceeded to break the bolt off inside the shaft. So, off to Ace to get a metal drill bit the right size (all the ones I had were bigger or not for metal), to assist my screw remover tool. So, I drill out the remaining portion of the bolt deep enough to seat the screw remover and am able to get it out. I bought a replacement M6 bolt at Ace and then reinstalled everything. It seemed to be OK.

How can I test the speed sensor itself? I heard mention of an ohm meter...what am I looking for and how would I go about that without tearing it up more? Are those easy/cheap to replace? It didn't look like it came off easily (if at all).


Any other thoughts (besides, jeez, he's stupid)?

Side note...if I can't get this solved immediately...what are the risks? I know some guys on here disable the ABS entirely, but I'm not looking to do that. That, and I hate idiot lights on my dash.

I'll bet the sensor went south on ya. And it is not cheap (list is $223.45). Part# is 89545-35030. Toyotapartszone.com sells it for considerably less though.

Make sure also you did not get anything on the ABS exciter ring (what the sensor reads on the axle).

I appreciate the links. Unfortunately, I couldn't find how to actually test the sensor itself. I found how to tell what the code means, so I'll get that read for sure.

From memory, I think it starts at DI-360 or afterwards.

I will let you know. I won't get my truck back until this weekend, though. It's at the shop getting ARB lockers & 5.29 gears. Woo hoo!! Hopefully I will have enough $$$ left over from that to fix this, if I have to replace it.
 
if the ABS ring (exciter) is off by even just a little bit, the sensor wont read properly which will turn the light on. as long as the light is on, the ABS system is not operating. This has happened to me once, along with 2 other techs at the Toyoata dealership I work at. we have a long steel tube that we use to pound everything into place. before we remove anything though, we measure everyhting from the end of the shaft so we know how far to go to drive it back into place

Well, it looks like the guy who did my bearings DID NOT measure or somehow put it back in the wrong place. Unfortunately my truck is still at the shop, as the parts didn't come in on time (don't get me started on THAT!), and the guys there realized the issue, since they had the shafts out to do my gears. So, now I get to try and make the shop who did the work make it right. Ugh! I'll keep you posted!

I feel slightly better that it wasn't my fault, but now it's still a pain in my ass to get fixed.

Ugh, I knew this was going to be a pain in the ass...

So, the guy at shop #1 (place that did my bearings) is now saying that his guy measures the position before replacing the bearings, so it must've been off when I brought it in. But, I tell him, the light wasn't on before I started all of this, so I think your guy must've put it back on in the wrong place. He is yet to admit this...his dilemma is now, he tells me, if I bring him the axle shaft, he won't know where to put the ring back to...

So, I ask you fine people...isn't there some spec distance that these things are put back on...not just, whatever it was when you got it?

I've been browsing through the FSM and can't find anything...it just says...replace the bearings, with no other info (at least that I can find). So, if anyone can help me with what the specs are, or some link to the full set of specs for a bearing re-press, I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm now in between phone calls with him...they're still deciding what they're going to do for me, I guess.

Thanks, pauls4runner... I did find it right before I saw your post, actually. I've picked up my axle shaft now from the shop that's doing my gears & lockers, but the other shop was already closed when I got back over this way. They still haven't said for sure if they're fixing it gratis, but I will raise holy hell if they don't! :D

The guy definitely pressed it down too far. You can even see a mark on the shaft where the retainer used to live. Oh well...we'll see if the shop manager wants to admit his guy could've actually made a mistake.

One of these days I'll get it all put back together and can actually take it wheeling!

Yup! it was definitely pushed in to far. It's a good thing you caught that now. I only figured it out after the axle oil came out all over my tires. The exciter ring has to move up about 3/4 inches up along with the second ring.
 
OK, the guys at the shop that did my bearings re-did the ABS ring and retainer for me yesterday at no charge. Yay!

So, now I have the axle shaft in my trunk again, and I am taking it back to shop #2 today, so they can put it all back together...at some point. I still don't think they're going to be done today. But, at least the ABS light "should" be fixed, and it didn't cost me anything, so that's always a plus.

Once I actually get it back and test drive it, I will let everyone know how it turned out.

Well, I finally got my truck back this past Friday and was pleased to see my ABS light was off again. So, it was definitely the ABS ring placement. Now I know to measure before I take in to have the bearings pressed. Thanks for all the suggestions!
